Before the first hard freeze, give the exterior of your home one more inspection.

Look at vents, rooflines, soffits, door sweeps, foundation gaps and other openings that pests and wildlife may use once cold weather settles in.

Thank you, Shawn, for the incredibly kind review!

We’re so glad we could help after a bat and squirrel found their way down your chimney. After checking things out, we found the chimney cap had been pried up, secured it back in place, and helped close off the access point.

Quick, efficient service is always the goal, but hearing that the experience also felt kind and easy means just as much to us.

If you’re hearing scratching, noticing wildlife activity, or think something may be getting into your chimney, attic or home, call Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions at 515-218-3400.

Raccoons are smart, resourceful animals, which is exactly why they can become difficult houseguests.

They may take advantage of roof edges, chimneys, decks, sheds and other sheltered areas. If you notice tracks, noises, damage or repeated nighttime activity around one part of the house, it is worth investigating.

Why are there suddenly more bugs in your house after all this rain?

Heavy rain can disrupt the places pests normally live outdoors. That can mean more ants near the kitchen, spiders in the basement, mosquitoes around standing water, and other pests looking for shelter. As temperatures drop and harvest season continues, mice may also start looking for ways inside.

Our latest blog covers what Central Iowa homeowners should look for after weeks of wet weather and when pest activity may be more than just a temporary nuisance.

Stink bugs are on the move.

As temperatures cool, stink bugs begin searching for warm places to spend the winter and your home can make the perfect hiding place.

Watch for them around:
• Windows
• Doors
• Siding
• Attics
• Garages

The best way to stop stink bugs is before they get inside. Sealing entry points now can help prevent large numbers from moving in this fall.

And whatever you do, don’t squish them! When crushed, stink bugs release a strong, foul-smelling chemical. If you find one indoors, it’s better to remove it without crushing it.

If you’re already seeing stink bugs around your home, Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions can help. Call 515-218-3400.

September is a good time to clean up the yard before cooler weather sends pests looking for shelter.

Add these four tasks to your fall cleanup checklist:

• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home.
• Rake and remove leaf piles that can create hiding and nesting spots.
• Trim shrubs, branches and vegetation away from siding, windows and rooflines.
• Clean gutters and remove standing water around your property.

A little fall maintenance can help reduce the places insects and other pests use to hide, nest and make their way toward your home.

If you’re already seeing pest activity or want help protecting your home through fall and beyond, call Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions at 515-218-3400.

Four bats have tested positive for rabies in Polk County so far this year, according to Iowa HHS. It’s an important reminder to know what to do if a bat gets inside your home, but also when to act before that happens.
If you’re hearing scratching or squeaking in your attic, walls or basement, or noticing other signs of bat activity, that’s a good time to have your home inspected. Addressing a potential bat problem before bats make their way into bedrooms and other living spaces can help reduce the chance of contact with people or pets.
If a bat does get inside, try to contain it to one room and keep track of where it goes. Don’t immediately release it outside if there’s a chance someone or a pet may have had contact with it. In some situations, the bat may need to be captured and tested for rabies.
Swipe through for what to watch for, what to do if a bat gets inside, and when testing may be important.
