Four bats have tested positive for rabies in Polk County so far this year, according to Iowa HHS. It’s an important reminder to know what to do if a bat gets inside your home, but also when to act before that happens.
If you’re hearing scratching or squeaking in your attic, walls or basement, or noticing other signs of bat activity, that’s a good time to have your home inspected. Addressing a potential bat problem before bats make their way into bedrooms and other living spaces can help reduce the chance of contact with people or pets.
If a bat does get inside, try to contain it to one room and keep track of where it goes. Don’t immediately release it outside if there’s a chance someone or a pet may have had contact with it. In some situations, the bat may need to be captured and tested for rabies.
