Anybody can open Word and make a certificate of destruction. You can buy a template online for eleven dollars.

So the paper by itself is not the thing. What gives it weight is who stands behind it and whether anybody audits them.

Worth a look at whatever your current vendor hands you.

Ask three people at a company who owns what happens to old computers and you get three different answers. Usually IT, usually finance, usually whoever has the room they are stacked in.

None of them are wrong. It is just a job nobody was ever handed on purpose.

If that sounds like your building, you are in extremely normal company.

We are in Urbandale. Our drivers are our employees, our facility is ours, and if something goes wrong on your job there is nobody else to point at.

That is most of what "local" is worth. It is not about being small.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the whole month will be about passwords and phishing.

Here is the one nobody covers. The old laptop in your storage room is not protected by any of it. It is not on your network, not in your inventory, and not covered by anything you bought.

Cheapest thing on the list to fix. Also the one nobody thinks of.

Saturday was the city's MEGA SCRUB.

Those come up more than people think. We run collection days with cities and organizations around Central Iowa most of the year and the schedule stays on our site.

The business side is quieter. Usually it is a truck, a dock, and a storage room nobody has opened since the last refresh.

Same standard either way. Counted, logged, destroyed to NIST 800-88 Rev 2, documented per device.

One of the better parts of this job is what happens to equipment that still has life in it.

Working machines get wiped, tested, repaired if they need it, and set up fresh. Some go to Buddies through our partnership with Best Buddies Iowa, which supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A computer changes what somebody can do on their own.

Whatever cannot be saved gets recycled responsibly. Nothing leaves here with data on it.

Saturday we are handling the electronics at the city's MEGA SCRUB out at Bell Ave Business Park, seven to one.

Not writing this so you bring a TV down.

It is the same crew and the same trucks that show up when we clear a county building on a Tuesday, and everything that comes through gets handled the same way it would on your job. A day like that is a stress test more than anything else.

If you ever want to see whether a vendor's process holds up when it gets busy, that is the day to come watch one.

The driver who picks up your equipment works for us. Background checked, on our payroll, in our truck.

Sounds like a small detail. It is most of the risk on that leg of the trip, and a lot of this industry hands it to a subcontractor.

This is a normal Tuesday in Urbandale.

Everything that comes through gets counted, and anything holding data gets logged by serial number before anybody touches it. Then it is destroyed to the NIST 800-88 Rev 2 standard and the method goes on the record for that specific device.

The recycling happens at the end, after the part that actually matters.

Many businesses assume all electronics recyclers offer the same service.
They don't.
A true IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) partner does more than recycle equipment. We help protect sensitive data, maintain compliance, provide complete asset reporting, and maximize value from retired technology.

If your organization is refreshing IT equipment this year, it's worth understanding the difference before choosing a vendor.
