Noises in the basement ceiling & reported squirrel running along on top of the basement foundation called for likely red squirrels. Basement was divided into finished and unfinished space. No signs of walnut cashing in the unfinished area but could be in the finished ceiling area. Results showed differently & explained the "larger than a mouse" noises

This is good information. One addition: not possible to tell if a bat (or other) has rabies. Being out in the daytime isn't necessarily a sign that a bat is rabid especially at this time of year when juveniles are navigating in and out of homes, they're not as practiced as adults. Safe capture and testing of the animal determines that info

Bat Tests Positive for Rabies in New Hartford
Oneida County Health Department Urges Residents to Recognize Signs of Rabies

A bat has tested positive for rabies in New Hartford. The bat was sent to the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Center for testing on July 27, 2026, and positive results were reported on July 31, 2026. Three humans were exposed to the bat and receiving post-exposure prophylaxis.

Signs of rabies include:
• Animal acting strangely
• Animal acting mad
• Animal acting shy
• Animal getting unusually close
• Drooling or foaming from the mouth

If you see an animal, wild or stray, with these signs, do not approach it and stay away. If any animal is acting strangely, call your local animal control officer for help. Additional resources include:

• Wildlife Rehabilitator: Licensed by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)

Per NYS Public Health Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies by 4 months-old and then one year following the initial dose. Dogs and cats need to receive a booster dose every three years following. Ferrets must receive booster doses annually. For the safety of pets and the convenience of county residents, the Oneida County Health Department offers Rabies Vaccination Clinics throughout the year in various community locations. The next two clinics are taking place in Rome and Trenton:

• August 3, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Rome Kennedy Arena
• October 9, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Town of Trenton Offices

I don't want your skunks 😜

Over the years I've received many calls from people attempting to trap woodchucks and inadvertently catching skunks

Disarm the box trap at dusk. Skunks are nocturnal (active during night) woodchucks are diurnal (active during day)

Please understand the NYS DEC laws and why they're in place. Relocating wildlife may separate adults from juveniles plus inadvertently spread diseases and/or viral & bacterial infections. Precautions should be taken when handling wildlife

Survival of relocated wildlife is low and may cause more harm than good by offsetting carrying capacity, introducing resource competition/diseases/viruses etc

I understand the intent but also the potential side effects

Received a call for a possibly rabid woodchuck, a very rare occurrence. Additionally we've seen the news about rabid beavers
