You can’t tell the story of Chaparral Feeders without Ralph Hesse in it. They don’t make ’em like Ralph anymore — a true cattleman, a sharp mind, a good horseman, and a father who worked side by side with his son Harper to build Chaparral Feeders from the ground up. Rest easy, Ralph.

Let’s chat a minute about grass-finished versus grain-finished beef.

🥩 Beef from both grass-finished and grain-finished cattle is safe, nutritious and delicious.
🥩 All cattle spend the majority of their lives in a pasture, eating grass.
🥩 For grain-finished cattle, less than 11% of their lifetime feed is grain.
🥩 Nutrition experts agree that all beef essentially provides the same health benefits.
🥩 All beef is a natural source of 10 essential nutrients including protein, iron, zinc and many B vitamins.
🥩 Both methods are sustainable. Grain-finished beef has a lower carbon footprint since the cattle reach production weight at a younger age. However, grass-finished cattle can contribute to sustainability by using forage from grasslands that sequester carbon.

Fact: Deforestation is not happening in the U.S. to make room for more cattle.

Let’s talk about why this is an important fact to share right now.

News broke this week of Christiana Figueres joining fake meat startup Impossible Foods. In a statement made to the press, Figueres said, “The consumption of animal products — and especially the consumption of beef — is detrimental to personal health as well as planetary health, because of embedded deforestation.” She goes on to say that “Impossible Foods is a company that understands the health argument and the climate argument.”

Let’s break that down for a minute:

We know that a wealth of research supports protein in a healthy diet. We also know that eating protein and maintaining an active lifestyle is healthy for your whole body, but especially for your heart.

Stay with us.

Figueres' mention of deforestation highlights an exceptional point about U.S. cattle production. We don’t cut down trees to make room for food production in the United States.

In fact, the innovative and efficient techniques U.S. farmers and ranchers use to produce food not only affords our country food independence and security but is has also increased our forestland by 40 million acres since the first world war.

It is important that we help consumers understand the facts about real beef production in the United States. If we leave that void unfilled, certainly others will step in to fill it for us. Find our sources in the comments below.
