He may have moved on, but we still wanted to have a Chonkers Appreciation Post. 🦭

The 2,000 pound stellar sea lion who made a temporary home at Pier 39 took over our feeds and hearts for the past few weeks. And he’s a perfect reminder of why we do what we do. We’re here to help preserve the oceans for Chonkers, his sea friends, and every creature that calls it home.

Fun fact: this photo was taken at Pier 39 in San Francisco in 2010, the same year Mango Materials’ was born! While Chonkers was still many years away from making his grand appearance, our love of the ocean and its creatures was already very much alive.

Some things never change.

Sometimes past photos make you reflect on the present and future.

As we were scrolling through our digital files, we came across this photo from over a decade ago. While this wasn’t what we had originally intended to find, this photo made us stop and reflect.

The environment feels natural. The waves roll in and out. The sand beneath the kiddo’s feet builds and erodes away.
Like it belongs.

And this made us think:
Many of the things we bring into moments like this… don’t leave the same way.

They stay.
Long after the child grows up.

Play should feel as natural as the places we love.

That’s why materials matter more than we’ve been taught and we’re excited to share more of our materials’ journey with you.
