Everybody loses when oaths and trust are broken and those who are sworn to protect do not do so. We are glad to see someone who so blatantly tarnished the honor of the badge held accountable, and look forward to continuing the hard work of helping move forward the conversation around systemic change and building trust and accountability.

We at Integrative Policing were excited to see that the City of Denver had engaged its community members by taking part in the Reimagine Policing and Public Safety Task Force last year so it was with disappointment that we learn Denver’s Director of Safety had pulled the agency out of the collaboration this week. We know that bridging the divides between a community as vibrant and diverse as the City of Denver is a tremendous challenge. It does not come easily, nor does it come quickly. This work is an investment of time and dialog. Both the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police and the United States Department of Justice COPS office have recognized our co-chaired and facilitated model as a highly successful strategy to overcome the barriers between law enforcement and the communities they serve. We would like to encourage the residents of the City of Denver and their public servants to persevere together to build a better tomorrow for all.

In a letter, Director of Safety Murphy Robinson accused the group of marginalizing police.

Today, September 12th, we celebrate the heroism of our neighbors, our friends, our co-workers. Volunteers from all over the nation who came together to sift through the shattered ashes of our new reality. They came to volunteer to find survivors at the twin towers, they volunteered to protect communities near to them and far. They volunteered to make their homes, neighborhoods, and communities better, safer places to live for all who call this country our home. We embraced each other, we cried together, and we were there for each other. When some were weak, others were strong to carry them through, and then those roles changed, and changed again. But WE came through it together. We learned the strengths we didn’t know we had, and we grieved for families we had not met. We were one nation, united. Today, September 12th, we celebrate the American spirit that makes this nation what it is, and the potential in all of us to make this nation better everyday.

Today, we lower our flags and our hearts to remember the 3000 men, women, and children who lost their lives on this tragic day 19 years ago. We pray for the families, children, spouses, and friends who had a part of their lives stolen by a vile act of hatred. We thank the lord that there were men and women who willingly sacrificed themselves to save the lives of strangers regardless of race, creed, or beliefs. Today we pay our respects to those victims who lost their lives. May we never forget who and what we lost on that clear blue morning in September 2001.

In these times, we at Integrative Policing believe that reflecting on Sir Robert Peel’s 9 principles on policing, the first of which is:
“The basic mission for which police exist is to prevent crime and disorder as an alternative to the repression of crime and disorder by military force and severity of legal punishment.”

The core of policing is community preservation. We cannot do that while the community is divided and embattled against each other. Peel understood the absolute importance of integration of a community and its law enforcement, and it is as true now as it was in 1829 when he originated it.

Our passion is to bring diverse populations together to build safer happier communities that work together to solve problems, and we would be honored to help yours.

Drumroll Please ....

We are thrilled to announce that, following over twelve years of field experience with this model, Megan McGee Bonta and Eric Tonba are expanding the Integrative Policing model with the creation of Integrative Policing LLC! We will be providing consult services to communities working to implement trust building and communications between vulnerable communities and law enforcement. By fostering the development of joint ownership of projects by law enforcement and the community, the attitude shifts from "Here's what you need to do" to "What can we do?" This data driven model has proven to increase victim reporting, reduce crime, and increase law enforcement recruitment of served vulnerable communities.
