Once your return is accepted by the IRS, it doesn’t just “magically” show up in your account.

Behind the scenes, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) a division of the U.S. Treasury is responsible for actually issuing federal payments, including tax refunds.

Here’s why that matters:

• BFS processes and distributes refund payments
• BFS manages the Treasury Offset Program (where refunds can be reduced for certain debts)
• BFS controls how federal funds are routed once approved

This means once your return leaves IRS review and moves to funding, it’s entering a federal payment system not your tax preparer’s system.
