New Episode 🎙 262: Should She Stay? Rethinking Cull Cow Decisions w/ Dr. Ron Gill

Should today's record cattle market change the way you make culling decisions?

This week, Texas A&M's Dr. Ron Gill discusses which culling principles should never change, where the current market may justify a different approach, and the traits that lead to a more profitable, longer-lasting cow herd.

Plus, in a lightning round of real-world scenarios, Dr. Gill weighs in on which cows stay, which ones go, and why.

Also, Don Day explains why this El Niño may have more in common with weather patterns from the 1950s than more recent El Niño events, and what that could mean for our long-range outlook.

What does it really cost to tighten a calving window from 120 days to 60?

For a 200-cow herd, the transition may require an estimated $90,400 investment over five years as conception rates adjust and the herd is rebuilt around a shorter season.

By Year 4, this model returns to a 92% conception rate—but completes calving in half the time. That means 360 hours recovered every year, equal to 45 eight-hour days or nearly nine full work weeks.

The transition is not free. The question is whether building a herd that fits your system—and gives you that time back—is worth the investment.

The mature weight of the U.S. cow herd has steadily increased over time. While larger cows are often perceived as more productive, this trend brings several economic challenges.

Pesticide pollution is a problem especially in the middle of the country. And sometimes there's enough of it to possibly hurt aquatic plants and animals.
