A few overlooked cleaning tasks can affect safety, efficiency, and appliance performance.

This summer, check your dryer vent, bathroom exhaust fans, refrigerator coils, and outdoor AC unit.

Vacuum the refrigerator coils so the appliance can release heat properly. Clean bathroom exhaust fan covers so moisture can move out of the room. Blow out or clean the dryer vent line so lint does not build up where you cannot see it.

Outside, gently rinse pollen, cottonwood, leaves, and grass clippings off the AC condenser fins with a regular hose. Skip the pressure washer. Those fins bend easily.

These are not pretty projects. Nobody is posting refrigerator coils on a design board.

But these quiet maintenance habits help your home keep functioning the way it should.

Warmer weather often brings unwanted visitors, especially around older homes.

Take a few minutes to look around doors, window seals, foundation cracks, garage door edges, and exterior utility penetrations. These are common places where pests, drafts, and moisture can find a way in.

Look for gaps, missing caulk, torn weather stripping, damaged screens, or places where pipes and wires enter the house.

Small openings can often be sealed with the right caulk, foam, screen repair, or weather stripping. If you see signs of an active pest problem, call a qualified pest professional before simply closing things up.

This is not about panicking over every tiny gap. It is about noticing where your home’s outer shell may need attention.

Good stewardship often starts with a slow walk around the house.

Summer vacation prep is not just packing bags, watering plants, and locking the door.

Before you leave, empty the garbage.
Trust us, you do not want to come home to a house that smells like hot garbage.

Then check the basics:
make sure appliances are off, set light timers if you use them, and secure loose outdoor items if storms are expected.

Set the AC around 75°.
That keeps the house from getting overly hot and humid while you are away without cooling an empty home more than necessary.

If heavy rain is in the forecast, check gutters, downspouts, sump pump operation, and anything outside that could blow around in a storm.

If you will be gone for an extended time, consider turning off the water.

A quiet house still has working systems.

A few minutes of attention before you leave can help you come home to fewer surprises.

If your basement took on water during last week’s storm and you’ve been without power, there may be another problem waiting after the cleanup:

Moisture.

Without electricity, many homeowners haven’t been able to run fans or dehumidifiers. Meanwhile, wet carpet, drywall, cardboard, furniture and other materials may have been sitting in a warm, humid basement for days.

As power comes back on, take another look downstairs.

Check the bottoms of walls and baseboards. Feel carpet and padding. Move boxes and furniture away from walls. Look in corners and closets where dampness can linger.

Then get the space drying as quickly as you safely can.

The water may be gone.

The moisture may not be.
