Today's cool field finds: Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) with his "knees" Cypress knees/ "Swamp knees" are out growth...

Today's cool field finds: Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) with his "knees"

Cypress knees/ "Swamp knees" are out growths of the trees horizontal roots. Their purpose is still a bit of a mystery though!

They could be startch storage for the tree, aeration for the roots, or maybe they function as a sediment barrier and help prevent erosion around the tree base. Our favorite possibility is that the "knees" mark the top of the swamp inundation!
