Google Search is starting to act more like a local-business concierge.

That matters if customers compare you before they ever visit your website.

• Google says AI Mode can break one complex question into multiple related searches, then combine the results with links.

• Google also says Search can call local businesses on a customer's behalf to check pricing and availability.

• For local service businesses, that means your Google Business Profile, service pages, FAQs, pricing language, hours, photos, and reviews are not just "SEO details" anymore. They are source material for AI-assisted answers.

• Practical move this week: search the way a real customer would: "best [service] near me for [specific problem]."

Then ask: would an AI answer have enough clear, current information to recommend us?"

A client can rank first on Google and still disappear when a buyer asks AI who to hire.

That is the part many agencies are missing.

Google ranking measures where a website appears in a list. An AI recommendation may give the buyer a shortlist—or one business—before the buyer ever compares websites.

No outside company knows the private algorithm inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Google AI. But an agency can test the questions real buyers ask and document which businesses those systems recommend.

I made this short video to explain the difference:

The question is no longer only, “Does my client rank?”

It is, “When the buyer asks AI who to choose, does my client make the answer?”

Run the test for one client:

A business can rank prominently in Google and still receive **zero recommendations** when prospective customers ask AI whom they should hire.

I know because I found one.

The website had strong technical foundations.

AI systems understood who the company was.

The business owned valuable Google rankings.

But across 24 commercial discovery questions in a dated audit, it received zero recommendations and zero mentions.

That clarified four outcomes that are easy to confuse:

1. Ranking in Google
2. Appearing in one Google AI answer
3. Being recognized by AI
4. Being repeatedly recommended by AI

They are not the same thing.

I call the difference the **AI Recommendation Gap**: the distance between being visible online and being selected when customers ask AI for a provider.

SEO still matters. It helps a business become accessible, understandable, and findable.

But a ranking report cannot tell you whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Google AI recommends the business across real customer questions—or which competitors appear instead.

That is the measurement problem RediForAI was built to address.

This week's video explains what our research found, what it proves, and what it does not.

**Question:** Have you ever compared a client's Google rankings with the businesses AI actually recommends?

Most web agencies already understand recurring revenue.
Website maintenance. Hosting. SEO. Reputation management. Social media. Content and email marketing.
Each one gives the client another reason to keep the agency involved after the website is finished.
I believe AI Presence Management is becoming the next addition to that list.
It doesn’t replace SEO, content, reputation, or social media. Those are all signals that can affect how AI platforms understand and recommend a business.
The opportunity is to bring those pieces together, track what is changing, and give the client a clear monthly picture of what was done, what improved, and what still needs attention.
And the agency’s biggest advantage may be the relationship already sitting at the center of all of it.
What recurring service has been most valuable to your agency—and are clients asking you about AI yet?

An excellent business in Vancouver is not a useful local recommendation if AI thinks it is in Portland.

For a local business, geography has to be clear and consistent.

That means checking whether:

- The location and service areas are accurate
- The Google Business Profile matches the website
- Major directories show the same information
- The business name, address, phone number, hours, categories, and services are consistent
- Credible local references connect the business to its community

If an AI system cannot determine where a business operates, it has less reason to present that company as a relevant local option.

Local Relevance helps establish that geographic connection.

For web designers and agencies, this is especially practical because much of the work is already familiar. The opportunity is to apply those existing skills to a new question: Does the business’s online presence make its local relevance clear?

Choose one client and compare the website with its Google Business Profile. What is the first inconsistency you find?

Your website can say you are the best. That does not make it evidence.

The stronger question is whether the rest of the web supports what the business claims.

That support might come from:

- Detailed customer reviews
- Professional associations and certifications
- Credible citations or news coverage
- Partner references and case studies
- Relevant industry profiles

The details matter.

A recent review describing a specific service may provide more useful evidence than a generic “Great company” comment. One profile on a respected industry site may matter more than ten low-quality directory listings.

Trust and Authority is the evidence layer of AI Presence Management. It helps assess whether a business appears established, credible, experienced, and supported by sources beyond its own marketing.

Take a look at one client’s website claims. What independent evidence can you find to support them?

AI search is becoming a second front door for local businesses.

For years, “being found” mostly meant ranking in Google and keeping your Google Business Profile clean.

That still matters. But customers are increasingly asking AI tools full questions like:
“Who should I call for emergency HVAC near me?”
“What is the best med spa for first-time Botox?”
“Which local accountant works with contractors?”

What small businesses should do now:

1. Write service pages that answer real buying questions, not just keyword phrases.
2. Keep your business details consistent: services, locations, hours, pricing signals, reviews, FAQs.
3. Add proof AI can understand: credentials, specialties, case examples, before/after outcomes, review themes.
4. Track whether you show up in AI answers, not just whether you rank on page one.

The practical shift: SEO is no longer only about getting clicks. It is also about becoming a trusted source that answer engines are willing to cite.

For local businesses, the question is getting simpler:
When AI gives someone a recommendation in your category, are you part of the answer?

08/18/2026

Searching for a business by name does not tell you whether AI will recommend it.

That is a branded search. AI Discovery asks a different—and much more important—question:

Does the business appear when a prospective customer asks an AI system who they should hire?

Questions like:

- Who is a good family dentist in Vancouver?
- Which local contractor specializes in kitchen remodels?
- Who can help with a difficult commercial insurance account?

A business may appear for one question and disappear for another. It may show up in one AI system but not the others.

That is why AI Discovery must be tested in real recommendation situations—not only by typing in the company name and checking whether AI recognizes it.

Watch the clip, then try this with one of your clients: Ask the kind of question their next customer would actually ask. Does the client appear?
