Fun Facts about Oregon Coast Heatwaves
It was a record-setting day along the Oregon coast over the weekend. The high temperature in Lincoln City yesterday (Sunday 6/14) was 92 degrees at just 12:45pm. That is early in the day. The low this morning (Monday) was 62 degrees at 5:28am.
By tomorrow (Tuesday), the daytime high will likely be just 62 degrees. The hot weather comes just as fast as it goes, with a simple switch of the wind direction along the coast. The Pacific Ocean is Mother Nature’s air conditioner. It can go from tee shirts and shorts to pants and jackets, in just a few hours.
One of the biggest temperature swings ever recorded on the Oregon coast occurred during the historic June 2021 “Heat Dome” event, when Portland reached 116 degrees. In Astoria, the temperature skyrocketed from a morning low in the 50s to an all-time record high of 101°F on June 27, 2021, under hot east wind coming down off the coast range, before a coastal marine push (NW wind) kicked in and dropped temperatures by over 40 degrees within a few hours.
Locals who live along the coast are well aware of this atmospheric phenomenon. Let’s not forget about the fog that rolls in with it, from time-to-time. So, if you are ever at the Oregon coast when it is 90 degrees, get down to the beaches quickly and enjoy it. It only stays around for a short period of time.
