We are off to Augusta today to join with our local farmers in a Farmer’s Day of Action. We are driving the beautifully bannered ‘Eat Downeast’ truck in the tractorcade. What are we protesting? Massive cuts to already allocated federal dollars that support local farms. This funding includes programs that your local farmers are benefiting from, and in turn, YOU are reaping the benefits of their work:
• Improvements to farm infrastructure that reduces run off and increases livestock health
• Grants for more sustainable energy inputs for your food production
• Direct purchasing dollars for a food pantry or school near you
• Programs that support food hubs to deliver food
• Marketing dollars to raise consumer awareness of local food options
• Programs that address historic marginalization of minorities from accessing USDA funding
• Staffing cuts for those very people that help our local farmers apply for and receive this funding
This is not an abstract issue – farmers YOU KNOW have been left holding the check for funding they were given contracts for to do work that we the people worked tirelessly to get passed and appropriated for over DECADES. This outrage is added to the many others, all held in wholesale disgust at this administrations’ blundering, hateful, and destructive intent. When things are wholesale, Crown O’Maine shows up. Wholesale is just what we do.
See you in the streets.
