That question on my whiteboard isn’t there for decoration, it’s there because it’s real.

After nearly 20 years in business and the last 4.5 years coaching and consulting with owners and leadership teams, I’ve learned something most people don’t want to admit:

Your ceiling is often created by what you tolerate.

Not your market.
Not your competition.
Not the economy.

What you allow, repeatedly.

You tolerate:

• Missed deadlines that become “normal”
• Pricing mistakes that erode margin as “they’ll do better next time”
• Weak communication with customers
• Team members who don’t live your standards
• Inaccurate numbers or KPIs you “hope” are right
• A sales process that’s inconsistent at best
• Your own lack of discipline in key areas

And over time, tolerance turns into culture.

I had to learn this myself ⬇️

Every standard you don’t enforce becomes a new baseline.

I’ve sat across from frustrated owners who want growth, more profit, better teams, but when we dig in, the gap isn’t strategy, it’s standards (or lack there of).

So here’s the exercise:

Take 10 minutes today and write down everything in your business that you KNOW isn’t right, but you’ve been allowing.

Then ask yourself:
“Why am I accepting this?”

Because until you raise your standards,
Your results won’t change.

Growth doesn’t start with doing more.

It starts with refusing to tolerate less.

How many times have you heard…
“I’m busy.”

You’ve probably said it too.

To customers.
To friends.
To your team.
To your family…even your kids.

But let’s be clear:

Busy does NOT mean Productive.

For a long time in my life and in my businesses, I wore “busy” like a badge of honor.

Sometimes I complained about it.
Sometimes I even pretended to be busy.

Why?

Because if I’m honest, it fed my ego.

I was constantly “doing more,” checking boxes, winning the battle against my never-ending to-do list, but losing the war on what actually mattered.

No real progress.
No real alignment.
No real purpose.

Just motion.

Now?

I choose something different.

I choose intentionality.
I choose focus.
I choose productivity rooted in purpose.

Not doing more,
Doing what matters.

Inspired by a recent conversation with a contractor that is experiencing some significant growth 💡

If you’re not consistently (meticulously) tracking your OVERHEAD and adjusting your PRICING accordingly you’re probably bleeding profit and calling it “growth.”

⬇️ Here’s a trap most owners fall into ⬇️

As the business grows, overhead grows with it (that’s natural, to be expected).

More people.

More tools.

More systems.

More complexity.

❌ But pricing stays the same.

That means every new job, sale, or project is quietly paying for yesterday’s business, not today’s reality.

Growth without pricing discipline doesn’t create freedom.

It creates exhaustion, cash stress and thinner margins and it can lead to BANKRUPTCY.

Revenue going up doesn’t mean profit is.

Only intentional adjustments do.

Growth requires courage, including the courage to charge what the business actually costs to run.

So, STOP asking people on BookFace what you should be charging and dive into the numbers for your specific business.
