A roof replacement is not background noise.

Compressors, nail guns, and a crew of strangers showing up at the house all day. The noise is persistent, and it is coming from directly above. Plan for your pet before we show up, not after.

A friend's place, daycare, or a sitter makes the day easier for everyone.

Recently, two of our clients in Middleton, both with dogs, collaborated to handle doggy day care during roofing day. One neighbor watched both dogs while the other neighbor's roof was redone. The following week, they switched roles and the neighbor with the new roof watched both dogs while the other had their roof replaced too.

Not everything growing on your Wisconsin roof needs to come off.

Algae staining, the dark streaking common on roofs near trees and water, is mostly a cosmetic issue. There is no solid evidence it is shortening the life of your shingles. Unless you are selling the house and the staining is visible from the street, spending money to clean it is probably not necessary.

Moss is a different problem entirely. It holds moisture against the shingle surface and can work its way under the edges over time, lifting shingles and creating a real lifespan issue. That one is worth addressing.

Know which one you have before you spend anything.

Your roof color will not meaningfully change the temperature inside your house. It can contribute to changing the temperature outside it.

Dark building materials absorb solar energy during the day and release it as heat into the surrounding environment. One dark roof does not move the needle. Thousands of them in a city do. That is the heat island effect, and it is a real phenomenon even if it has no practical impact on your individual energy bill.

If you like a lighter shingle just as much as a darker one, that is a legitimate reason to choose it. The decision inside your house comes down to aesthetics. The decision at scale is a different conversation.

Our most popular installed shingle color at Sun Vault Roofing is Moire Black. About a third of customers choose because it works on almost any house.

It is timeless, does not clash with most exterior colors, and if you are adding solar, the dark glass of the shingles blends better with black than with lighter colors.

Do black shingles make your house warmer? No. At least not if your attic is properly ventilated and insulated. You should pick a color based on what looks best. But there is one potential concern to know about: urban heat. If every house on the block goes dark, the neighborhood can get warmer.

Are metal roofs really quieter? Independent testing says no. And in general, for jet noise like on Madison's east side, the roofing surface matters very little. What truly reduces aircraft noise inside your home is attic insulation, airtight sealing around penetrations, and better windows and doors. Asphalt shingle prices track crude oil prices with a sixty to ninety day lag. An asphalt shingle is made of three things: fiberglass, rock granules, and asphalt. That third component is a byproduct of crude oil refining. When oil prices increased in March 2026, Wisconsin suppliers raised shingle prices by approximately ten percent starting in June.

Material cost increases in the roofing industry tend to hold even when the oil price that drove them falls back. Suppliers also tend to raise prices at least once per year independent of oil market movement. A quote received today reflects current costs. A quote received six months from now may be higher regardless of what oil does in the meantime.

At Sun Vault Roofing, estimates are typically valid for thirty days from delivery. If you are planning a roof replacement and have a quote in hand, that window matters.

A common question we get: are solar shingles affected by oil price swings the same way asphalt is? The material cost structure is different and not as directly tied to crude oil. That said, integrated solar roofs do still use some asphalt shingle materials, so they are not fully insulated from cost increases either.
