I joined the Verplanck Fire Department this afternoon to announce the completion of the department’s new roof.

The previous roof was more than 50 years old and had become prone to significant leaks, putting essential equipment at risk. I’m proud to have secured the grant funding that made this long-overdue renovation possible, helping protect critical resources while providing a safer, more reliable facility for the dedicated individuals who serve and protect our community.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Life Active Member David William Bender.

David dedicated 47 years of service to the Verplanck Fire Protective Association, having joined the department in August 1979. Throughout his years of service, he faithfully served as the Association's Treasurer for many years and was also a dedicated EMT and firefighter. His commitment, leadership, and unwavering service to our department and community will never be forgotten.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Shrub Oak Methodist Church Cemetery.

Please keep David's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Earlier today, we responded to the Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School for a fire alarm. While the investigation did not turn up anything, upon a second alarm, it was discovered that an electrical battery box short circuited, causing a smoke condition and a strong odor of burning in the school. There is no damage to the school.

The Verplanck Fire District announces that the proposition to authorize the sale or transfer of the “Schoolhouse Building” located at 210 6th Street in Verplanck has not been approved by voters.
