What an amazing day at our Co****le Tournament in loving memory of Shawn O’Mara Sr.! We can’t thank everyone enough for making today such a special, fun, and memorable event.

A HUGE thank you to all of our generous sponsors for your donations and support, to all the teams who came out to play, and to all the spectators who came to cheer everyone on. Your support truly means the world to us!

To all of our volunteers, family, friends, and firehouse members who helped with the planning, setup, cooking, organizing, and everything in between, we couldn’t have done it without you. So much work goes on behind the scenes, and we are beyond grateful for every single person who gave their time and helped make this day happen.

Today was filled with laughs, friendly competition, great food, and so many wonderful people coming together for a meaningful cause. Seeing everyone come out, have fun, and support Shawn’s children made all the hard work worth it.

Most importantly, this tournament was about more than just co****le. It was about keeping Shawn’s name alive, honoring his memory, and bringing our community together for him and his family.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making today such a success. We hope everyone had as much fun as we did! We truly have an amazing community, and we are so grateful for all the love and support shown today.

Shawn, this one was for you. Forever remembered, never forgotten.

I joined the Verplanck Fire Department this afternoon to announce the completion of the department’s new roof.

The previous roof was more than 50 years old and had become prone to significant leaks, putting essential equipment at risk. I’m proud to have secured the grant funding that made this long-overdue renovation possible, helping protect critical resources while providing a safer, more reliable facility for the dedicated individuals who serve and protect our community.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Life Active Member David William Bender.

David dedicated 47 years of service to the Verplanck Fire Protective Association, having joined the department in August 1979. Throughout his years of service, he faithfully served as the Association's Treasurer for many years and was also a dedicated EMT and firefighter. His commitment, leadership, and unwavering service to our department and community will never be forgotten.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Shrub Oak Methodist Church Cemetery.

Please keep David's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Earlier today, we responded to the Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School for a fire alarm. While the investigation did not turn up anything, upon a second alarm, it was discovered that an electrical battery box short circuited, causing a smoke condition and a strong odor of burning in the school. There is no damage to the school.

The Verplanck Fire District announces that the proposition to authorize the sale or transfer of the “Schoolhouse Building” located at 210 6th Street in Verplanck has not been approved by voters.
