PRINCIPLE OF THE PHOENIX #7: RISE ABOVE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

In life and business, we often face challenges that seem impossible to handle. This principle teaches us how to overcome adversity and transform our circumstances, no matter how difficult they appear.

The Challenge:
In the world of international trade and business, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by challenges beyond our control. Economic downturns, political instability, or unfair competition can leave us feeling victimized and powerless.

Common Feelings:
The World owes you something
A sense of helplessness in the face of market volatility
Frustration with regulatory hurdles that seem insurmountable
Anger towards competitors who use unethical practices
Despair about circumstances that feel impossible to change

The Reality:
When we suffer, we grow as human beings. Life will put you in circumstances where you are the victim and in the face of injustice. The world doesn't always provide justice for those who are victimized. Waiting for others to fix our problems or save us from dire circumstances often leads to disappointment.

A Personal Journey:
Growing up in Eritrea, our opportunities for education, work, and the future were limited. Families are spread all over the world, seeking a better future. When I came to the United States at the age of 12, I did not speak any English. The cultural difference and the language barrier presented a different set of challenges. My journey in the U.S. Military strengthened and changed me. You cannot leave the service without being impacted, especially when you are as outspoken as I am. The chance to live the American dream helped me overcome those challenges.

The Principle:
Instead of waiting for others, we must find the strength within ourselves to overcome adversity. Rising above your circumstances isn't just about survival—it's about unlocking your potential to create positive change. The World needs the change only YOU can bring.

By refusing to be defined by our challenges and instead choosing to overcome them, we open ourselves to new possibilities and opportunities for growth. Remember, adversity can be a powerful catalyst for personal and professional development. Every obstacle you overcome makes you stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to face future challenges. Don't chain yourself to your circumstances—rise above them and become the phoenix you were meant to be.

PRINCIPLE OF THE PHOENIX #6: BE WILLING TO SACRIFICE

Being willing to Sacrifice is a crucial concept in entrepreneurship. It represents the readiness to give up personal comforts and social relationships to build something greater. This principle is essential for anyone embarking on an entrepreneurial journey or facing challenges in their business endeavors.

When you sacrifice for your business, you might be feeling:

Joy and excitement, especially in the early phases
Loneliness and isolation from sacrificing social relationships
Guilt and Shame for not spending enough time with loved ones.
Financial stress from giving up a stable income or lifestyle
Emotional turbulence from the highs and lows of entrepreneurship
A sense of purpose and meaning from working towards a goal
Pride and satisfaction in building something meaningful
Anxiety about maintaining work-life balance
Feelings of being trapped by promises and commitments made

Personal Journey:

Creating and growing Phoenix Global demanded significant personal and professional sacrifices. Personally, it meant time away from family and friends.
Professionally, it involved leaving a tenured career with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to follow my dream of building my own company. These sacrifices are paying off and, hopefully, will continue to yield great rewards.

Of course, these feelings can easily be felt simultaneously and may even rise and fall in intensity over a business’s evolution. Positive and negative feelings can coexist in an entrepreneur's mind and heart. The key ultimately lies in managing those feelings and keeping the underlying long-view goals that inspired the SACRIFICE in the first place.

PRINCIPLE OF THE PHOENIX #5: THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY.

From $75 a month to building a future: This is how small businesses can change lives globally. At Phoenix Global, we live by the principle: Think Globally, Act Locally.

Here's why it matters:
Small businesses in America often struggle to enter international markets. We're changing that. By removing trade barriers and leveling the playing field, we're opening new opportunities for small businesses while making a global impact.

Meet a family in Cairo: a refugee family from Sudan: Najwa, Yasmine, Feruz, and Mohammed. They were surviving on just $75 a month from the UN, their dreams of better lives fading with each passing day. Najwa's aspiration to become a psychologist, Yasmine's goal of being a physical therapist, and Feruz and Mohammed's entrepreneurial ambitions all seemed impossibly out of reach.

We witnessed a remarkable transformation by thinking globally about our business model and acting locally to employ this family. Najwa enrolled in psychology courses, Yasmine began physical therapy training, Feruz pursued cosmetology, and Mohammed started learning business management. Their quality of life improved dramatically, moving from mere survival to building a future.

The lesson here is powerful: when businesses think beyond their local boundaries and act purposefully in specific communities, they can create ripple effects of positive change. It's not just about profit; it's about leveraging our global perspective to make tangible, local impacts.

This story reminds us why "Think Globally, Act Locally" is more than just a catchy phrase—it's a principle that can guide businesses to expand their horizons while making real differences in people's lives.

When our clients choose us, they're not just buying products and services but transforming lives. Join us in proving that small businesses can drive global change. Choose purpose alongside profit.

PRINCIPLES OF THE PHOENIX #4: BE WILLING TO SUFFER

Charting your own course in the international trade market is not for the faint of heart. Here's what to expect:

• Deals will fall through
• You'll face discrimination and challenges
• You'll question your purpose
• Depression and the urge to give up will hit you
• You'll lose money, time, friends, and family
• Your relationships will change
• You'll have to reinvent yourself
• Long days and sleepless nights await

But remember: "The struggle is where greatness comes from" - Ben Horowitz, "The Hard Thing About Hard Things"

The journey is tough, but it's worth it. Keep moving forward. Your resilience will define your success.

PRINCIPLES OF THE PHOENIX #3: SUSTENANCE COMES FROM THE CREATOR, NOT HUMANS.

Have you ever found yourself questioning your values when faced with money, promotions, or business deals? Sometimes, you feel indebted to those who've helped you succeed. These factors can significantly influence your decisions and actions.

Common Feelings:

You might find yourself feeling:
1. Worry that the opportunity will disappear if you do not compromise your values
2. Uncertainty about future clients or work
3. Feeling dependent on a job, person, or company as if they are your only option
4. The conflict between principles and potential financial gain
5. Feeling pressured to make a decision that doesn't fully align with your values
6. Rationalizing or making excuses to justify actions that go against their values
7. Questioning your integrity or worrying about how others may perceive your choices

Personal Experience:

As a black Muslim woman and a business owner, I constantly find myself having to remind myself that Sustenance comes from the creator, not humans, because I deal with religious and racial discrimination and sexism at every turn.

Recently, I was told my identity is the issue; the best thing to do is to have a male family member represent my company, and I can be presented as their employee to combat sexism in international deals. That was by far the worst advice I received. It is erasing my identity to get clients and money. The very thing that goes against Phoenix's Principles.

I told myself that Sustenance comes from the creator, not humans. If something is meant for me, no power in the universe will keep that from me. I will continue to be myself fully, be proud, and still get plenty of clients because as long as I do the work and leave everything else to the creator, I will not be at a loss, and everything will work in my favor. I will Rise Above my circumstances and Be Relentless in pursuing my dreams no matter the challenge.

Reminder of the Principle:
Your values, identity, and integrity will be tested. Don't betray yourself for any gains, financial or otherwise. Remember that no one can take what's meant for you. Sustenance comes from the creator, not humans.

PRINCIPLES OF THE PHONEIX #2: BE SELF-MOTIVATED AND DISCIPLINED.

There are days when we do not want to get out of bed. There are times when you want to give up, question your purpose, and question whether you are on the right track.

Times where you crossed all of your Ts and dotted all of your Is, and still, business deals do not go through. People or companies do not keep their promises and end up wasting your time. You lost money, time, and energy. Then you start looking inward and cannot find the fault; you find yourself in the STRUGGLE.

During those times, Find that one thing that keeps you going. Find your WHY for starting your business or project. The world is waiting for the changes only YOU can bring.

That is when being self-motivated and disciplined come into play. Self-motivation is important. It keeps you moving when you face setbacks. Staying motivated and disciplined enables you to keep working towards your goals incrementally, even if progress feels slow. When facing challenges, having disciplined routines and habits helps maintain a sense of normalcy and keeps you moving forward despite low motivation.

Self-motivation and discipline are internal drivers that keep you moving forward and progressing, even when external circumstances are challenging. They provide the mental fortitude and consistent action needed to overcome struggles and achieve long-term goals.

PRINCIPLES OF PHOENIX #1: FIND COMMON GROUNDS

We all fear the things we do not know. When we feel scared or attacked, somebody is going after who we are.

When my son was born, he was much lighter than me. I jokingly questioned whether he was my child. When he was old enough to go out in the sun, I took him to beaches and pools so he could tan and look like me.

Then George Floyd's tragic death happened, and my world tilted on its axis. For the first time, I felt a conflicting sense of relief that my son's skin tone didn't match mine. I realized this difference might keep him safer on the streets, making him less likely to be seen as a threat by law enforcement.

As COVID restrictions began to ease, I visited a local restaurant in Tysons. There, I struck up a conversation with a couple who were Republicans and white - people I assumed I'd have nothing in common with. But I kept an open mind, and to my surprise, I discovered we shared many of the same values. We talked about our families and hopes for the country's future, and we even found we had similar tastes in music.

One of them became my mentor, helping my business move forward in ways I hadn't imagined possible. This experience opened my eyes to the power of conversation and connection. I realized there was more to bringing us together than dividing us if only we dared to have those conversations.

Inspired by this revelation, I began seeking more conversations with individuals of different races, political views, religions, and ethnicities. Each interaction chipped away at the fear I had been carrying for my son's safety and well-being. I started to see the world differently, not as a place to be feared for our differences, but as a blend of diverse experiences and perspectives that could enrich our lives.

As I watched my son grow, I realized my journey had come full circle. The fear of the unknown that once gripped me had led me to a profound truth: our differences don't have to divide us. They can be a source of strength, understanding, and growth. All it takes is the courage to reach out, listen, and keep an open heart and mind to Find Common Grounds.
