If you could protect only one thing, what would it be?

That’s the question behind Criticality, the first factor in the CARVER Methodology.

Criticality measures how essential a target or asset is to the mission, system, or business as a whole.

It asks: If this asset were disrupted, how much would everything else be affected?

The more central and essential it is, the higher it scores.

Example:
A regional data center handling 80% of transaction processing would have far greater criticality than a satellite office with local backups.

Criticality helps you separate what is important from what is essential - so you know what deserves attention first.
