Monday Security Memo: Intellectual Firepower for Professionals

Autonomy Isn’t a Switch. It’s a Spectrum.

AI is transforming critical infrastructure security, but the real challenge is not automation; it’s where humans stay in control, and where machines operate independently.

From human-in-the-loop systems to fully autonomous responses, modern security depends on understanding how decision-making is distributed across people and machines.

Tools like CARVER+ ARES show how AI can enhance this balance by rapidly identifying vulnerabilities, analyzing threats, and simulating risk scenarios to support better human judgment.

The future of security is not human vs. machine; it is defining the right mix of both.

What is CARVER?

CARVER is a multi-purpose analytical tool designed to measure risk, something every professional encounters in one form or another.

What makes the CARVER methodology unique is that it enables both qualitative and quantitative assessment of an asset, a problem, a person, or a situation.

In simple terms, it is a different way of thinking, especially when faced with complex or high-stakes decisions.

It is a learned technique that helps professionals develop structured thinking, improve judgment under pressure, and ultimately think like a spy.

What is an Asset?

In security and risk analysis, clarity starts with definition.

An asset is any:
• Person
• Environment
• Facility
• Material
• Information
• Equipment
• Reputation
• Activity
that has positive value.

In vulnerability assessment and threat analysis, correctly identifying assets is critical because you cannot protect what you have not clearly defined.

When assets are misunderstood or overlooked, security decisions become incomplete.

Clear definitions lead to better security decisions.

The Human Factor in Security is the Hardest Problem

Critical thinking is becoming increasingly rare in today’s information environment.

Often, the first piece of information someone sees becomes the “truth” they hold onto, even when facts later prove otherwise. Once a narrative is formed, it becomes extremely difficult to change.

This creates a major security challenge: we rely on people as a force multiplier to see something, say something, and report unusual behavior, but at the same time, human behavior is also the most exploitable layer in any system.

It’s far easier to focus on physical security, like fences and cameras, than to address human perception, bias, and complacency. Yet, that is exactly where modern threats operate.

Adversaries understand this. They study behavior, influence perception, and exploit how information is consumed and believed.

That’s why security today is not just about systems, it’s about awareness, thinking, and human judgment under influence.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
— African Proverb

I’m writing this from Clearwater Beach ahead of a weeklong conference where I’ll be speaking, paneling, and leading a workshop on the CARVER Methodology.

Moments like these are never solo efforts; they are built on teammates, partners, family, mentors, and collaborators who make the work possible.

Even my three-year-old reminds me daily: “Superheroes never quit… and teamwork makes the dream work.”

Looking back across 130+ countries, one truth stands out: nothing meaningful is ever built alone.
