Light & Life (Part 1)

In John 1:1-3, the Word was in the beginning, was with God, was God, and was the active cause in the origin of all things. Now John declares that life came from Him.

John 1:4a
"In him was life," [ESV]
ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, [NESTLE]
En auto zōē ēn, [INT]
In him life was [INT]

In the Word was zoe, life, the state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animate or every living soul [STRONGS1]. In his first epistle (apostolic letter), John wrote that "the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; hand indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ" [1 John 1:2-3].

The Word was Creator with God

In John1:1, we see the Word was in the beginning, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In verse 2, his presence with God is re-emphasized and bodily proclaimed as the origin of all things.

ORIGIN, PRESENCE, AND DIETY OF THE WORD

"In the beginning was the Word,..."
Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος

In the archē [ἀρχῇ ] means, at the origin or in the beginning. This word refers to "that by which anything begins to be, the origin, the active cause" [STRONGS1]. The Logos, the Word, was not only present at the origin, in the beginning, but was also the active cause of the origin. ...

πραΰτης
prautēs

Prautēs is one of my favorite "Fruits of the Spirit" to talk about. It means gentleness of spirit, meekness, humility or mildness of disposition. I enjoy talking about this characteristic because "meekness" is often confused with "weekness," but in reality they are polar opposites. Prautēs (meekness) actually refers to force or strength that is intentionally held in reserve. It is a gentle strength or gentle force - the characteristic of having great strength and the self-discipline to reserve the use of that strength or show of force when it isn't appropriate or useful to do so. Think of a high-powered sports car driven with the cruise-control set to 55mph. Consider a nation with the most powerful military or weapons arsenal on earth that doesn't attack. Or, to get right to the heart of the matter, consider the Creator of the universe coming down from His heavenly throne to take the form of a man, the Son of Man, and willingly allow sinful men to imprison Him, beat Him, and execute Him - when He could have destroyed them all with a mere thought. That is meekness. That is prautēs. That is the character and self control that Christ want's to see in His disciples. Not weaklings, but powerful, bold, and courageous disciples that have the self-control to hold that power in reserve for the benefit of others - just as He did.

πίστις
pistis

Persuasion, credence, moral conviction, faith; fidelity, faithfulness
A steadfast moral conviction that is both characterized by faith in Christ and faithfulness to His teaching is a Fruit of Spirit that should be evident in the lives of His disciples.

ἀγαθωσύνη
agathōsynē

Uprightness of heart, kindness, or simply goodness. Agathōsynē is the goodness or righteous heart that Christ exemplified and calls His disciples to show to others.
Be kind. Be good. Have a bold heart for righteousness!

χρηστότης
chrēstotēs

This word is often translated "kindness." Literally, it means "usefulness" in the sense of excellence in character or demeanor, moral goodness, integrity, and kindness. Yes, it is kindness, but it is much deeper than just being kind and it is a Fruit of the Spirit that must be exemplified by disciples of Christ as a reflection of His excellence in character and moral demeanor, His integrity, and His kindness.
