⚓️ FIRSTIE FRIDAY ⚓️

Our final Firstie Friday post features MIDN 1/C Smith. MIDN Smith is an Economics and Humanities major from Annapolis, MD. He will be commissioning as a Marine Officer and attending TBS in the fall. Here is what he has to say about his time at Villanova:

“When I reflect on my time at Villanova and in NROTC, I can say for certain that it was the people that made my experience. I am forever grateful to the Active-Duty Staff, to my professors, and to the Midshipmen that they were beside me every step of the way. Everyday I was pushed to become a better version of myself through every early morning, every tough week, and every milestone. That support system kept me humble, grounded, and motivated, and will allow me to become the officer I hope to be one day. As I move forward, I do so with a deep sense of pride and responsibility, ready to lead with honor, courage, and commitment. Wherever I am called next, I hope to always remember the simple moments, like the SPIT breakfasts with my classmates, the celebrations after Military Excellence Competitions, and enjoying liberty on summer trainings across the nation.”

⚓️ FIRSTIE FRIDAY ⚓️

Our first Firstie Friday post this week is MIDN 1/C Rodriguez. MIDN Rodriguez is a Physics Major from Dover, MA. He will be commissioning as a Submarine Officer, and here is what he has to say about his time at Villanova:

“The last four years at Villanova have truly been instrumental in shaping who I am today, and I am so grateful for all of the people who have been part of my journey. The staff and MIDN in NROTC have been a steady presence in my life and I am thankful for them pushing me to become a better and person and better leader every single day. Without them and the friends I have made throughout my time at Villanova, I would not where I am now. The memories and lessons will stay with me wherever I go. I am proud to have been a part of this unit and I am excited to continue my journey!”

Study Abroad Spotlight: Take a look into MIDN 2/C Friedl and MIDN 3/C McKernan’s semesters as they spent the semester abroad!

“Studying abroad in Madrid, Spain has been an amazing experience. While traveling, I’ve been able to try new foods, meet unique people and learn a lot about other cultures. I have loved my time abroad and some of the best memories were a hot air balloon ride in Mallorca, seeing the Crown of Thorns in Notre Dame, and camel rides in Morocco!” -MIDN 2/C Friedl

“As a sophomore, this semester abroad pushed me well beyond my comfort zone. From immersing myself in daily life in Urbino, Italy—where English is not the norm—to experiencing diverse cultures across Europe and into Africa, each moment greatly influenced me. Notably, meeting Marine Corps veterans at the Paralympic hockey games in Milan and riding camels through the Sahara Desert were unforgettable experiences. These opportunities broadened my perspective in lasting ways.” -MIDN 3/C McKernan

⚓️ FIRSTIE FRIDAY ⚓️

This week’s Firstie Friday highlight is MIDN 1/C Sams! MIDN Sams is a Mechanical Engineering Major from Apex, North Carolina. He will be commissioning as a Student Naval Aviator in the U.S. Navy. Here is what he says about his time at Villanova:

“My time in Villanova NROTC will always stand out as some of the best years of my life, because of the people who shaped my path. From the AD staff and professors to, most importantly, my fellow MIDN, I was constantly pushed to become a better version of myself. I was surrounded by leaders worth looking up to, who are people I hope to emulate throughout my Naval career. No matter the challenges of the program, I always had a strong support system that motivated me and helped shape me into a better future officer. I’ll always miss the friends I made and our Spit breakfasts after every PT freshman year.”

Last weekend, our Spring FEX served as a culminating event, bringing together the skills our aspiring Marine Officers have been developing throughout the year. Over the course of the weekend, they executed day and night land navigation, small unit leadership evaluations, and multiple hikes. All of it was designed to prepare our aspiring Marine Officers for the realities of OCS and TBS, where performance under pressure, decision-making, and leadership truly matter. Across all events, our aspiring Marine Officers covered roughly 20 miles and were challenged by demanding conditions, testing both their physical endurance and mental toughness. This evolution wasn’t about comfort, it was about building leaders who can think, move, and lead when it’s hardest.

Meet the Fall 2026 Upper Battalion Staff!

I’m MIDN 2/C Brites and I am Statistics major from Cedarhurst, NY. I’m honored to serve as the Battalion Commander for the upcoming fall semester. My favorite memory with the battalion came from this year’s Navy Ball. I also enjoy competing in drill at the various MECs that we attend. I am super excited to have a great semester with the rest of the Battalion.

My name is MIDN 2/C Steidle, and I am an economics major from Collingswood, NJ. I am excited and honored to serve as the Battalion Executive Officer this coming fall. My favorite NROTC memory was flying with an MH-60s Squadron after marching in the 250th anniversary parade in Philadelphia this past fall. I am looking forward to working with the rest of the staff and continuing developing the Battalion as a whole.

My name is MIDN 2/C Lemire and I am a Comprehensive Science major from Merrimack, New Hampshire. I am excited to serve the Battalion as the upcoming Command Master Chief in the fall to continue instilling integrity and discipline among myself and fellow MIDN. My favorite part about NROTC is working out with my peers who always push me to be better every day.

I am MIDN 2/C Weeldreyer, and I am a Political Science major from McLean, VA. I am honored to be the Operations Officer in the fall. I love being surrounded by the best the nation has to offer and learning to lead for my time in the Fleet. I’m looking forward to completing my Ironman 70.3 in September and the Freedom Challenge in November.
