#1 HVAC (self care)
You are most likely fighting the heat here in Tidewater, trying to stay comfortable in your home on days with the heat index in the 100s. Whether you have a new or old unit for heat and a/c you should take care of it. Starting outside, keep brush and high grass from growing up around the unit. The units move air and need air. When coming inside the home take time to keep the filters cleaned on a regular basis and replaced as needed. You can see the dust build up in just a month. Clean the vent cover leading to the filter to always keep air flowing. Like a person with asthma, your HVAC unit needs to be able to get air moving. It's also important to keep the return accessible. If you have a return in a wall or closet don't block the grate.
While these aren't all the services you need, they will help.
If you aren't able to climb and clean these areas, be sure to call a professional maintenance service.
