Where is Technology Headed?
If a "cure" for any mental illness involves connecting a "stabilizing A.I. influence", like adding a motor to a boat that only had sails, then the subject would gain a measure of control they may never have experienced.
I believe humanity will get there eventually because our history is all about the use of tools! From the Abacus, to adding machine, calculator, computer and now Smartphone device, each "tool" was introduced, taught, adopted and used to design the next generation of better devices. Now we are on the brink of understanding neural networks as these exist within the brain, we have created "machine vision" (object recognition) first and are now developing "machine learning" strategies and techniques, so it will not be long before "mental capacity augmentation" becomes a real thing! Probably first in the form of connecting devices for organizing tasks or storing and recalling information first ~ a "virtualized" agent with no keyboard or mouse pointer, but which ideally responds to verbal commands (knowns) to accomplish deeds. Think of a portable Alexa or Siri "learning" about our needs, tasks and weaknesses by traveling with us and passively observing all that we do.
Gradually, the failings of our organic minds will be supplemented out of existence, maybe...
