"I had no idea..."

Today I was privileged to receive a "behind the scenes" tour of Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia. Here are a bunch of things I learned about how my donated items help our community (I'm specifically referring to my local Goodwill that covers 39 cities and counties—imagine how these scale around the country!):

1. Last year, Goodwill took the sales revenue from donated items to run over 20 workforce development programs that placed over 2000 unemployed/underemployed folks with more than 1100 employers...at over $12/hour.

2. They provide a wide spectrum of FREE community employment services ranging from self-serve resource access through at-the-job coaching for folks with special needs. 8,435 job-seekers were served in 2017.

3. They partner with Thomas Nelson Community College to provide training and credentials for the building and construction trades.

4. They kept 40,000,000 pounds of household items, including electronics, out of landfills.

I recommend you consider signing up for a tour. This is a gem in our neighborhood, but many of us only know it as a thrift shop. So. Much. More.

Measuring countable things like donor dollars, volunteer hours or beds provided indicate activity…but not necessarily the difference you m...
