Used in Children's Classes but these exercises work great for adults too!

Some children struggle to sit still because their core strength isn't strong enough to hold the upper body up against the forces of gravity.

Incorporate these exercises in to your child's daily routine to improve core strength and help children to focus during circle time.

"We fall into a trap of insensitivity to ourselves and our bodies, what we can do in Pilates is to transcend the old thinking and begin to experience a freedom in our process of thinking and moving."

What can we do to reconnect to our body, what may be the ultimate answer to longevity?

1. Take classes that focus on breath, alignment and bring the mind into a state of recovery and focus. I personally have been doing Yin Yoga (slow and stretch based) but Pilates, Ballet and Yoga all work!

2. Spend 10 minutes a day exploring the foam roller. Align the Roller with the length of the spine to allow the smaller attachment muscles to release or lay it width-wise to open the chest.

3. Use a large Physio-Ball. Simply sit on it to have playful freedom, rolling, side to side hip-shaking action that frees the pelvis from the low back and hamstrings, or lay your upper back over it and take a big breath!

4. If you are older, simply drawing your knees into your chest and swaying gently from side to side will relax the back and hip-flexors.

This "ageing" athlete (28 years old!) updated his routine to stay on top of his game...

“I’ve changed a couple of things with recovery but the biggest thing I’ve done is bring in a part of pilates into my weekly routine.

“The guy I do it with is quite good, we have a one-on-one session and he knows when I look tired and when I don’t look tired, so he pushes me a bit more but I think it’s brought a bit more mobility to my body which is important as you get older.”

Last weekend was a strange one for CJ Stander as he tells the media on Thursday at the Ireland squad announcement in Carton House. Two teams that he currently represents, Munster and Ireland, were both playing, yet he wasn't involved. Munster secured an impressive win against the Cheetahs in Bloemfo...

Joe Pilates titled one of his books "Return to Life" for a reason!!

"Based on the surgeon's approach and invasiveness of the procedure, there may be individualised modifications necessary. Relative to the patient's long-term physical goals, Pilates can be an excellent gateway to meeting the challenge of recovering and even exceeding previous physical fitness levels ever before attained. The method of Pilates is a one size fits all, you can hobble into your first session and literally perform a high jump within a relatively short time frame."

Several studies have been done to support the benefits of the Pilates method for post-operati...

Why I choose Pilates? It mirrors most my ability to connect it to real life.

Take-away for ME:
Centering: “A unique trinity of a balanced body, mind and spirit,” is how Joe described his system. We center our mind by coming into the present moment and center our body from the center out. This action helps create a harmonious mind/body connection which, in turn, uplifts the spirit.
Daily Takeaway: A sense of ability to ground in what is, rather than wishing for what might be.

Take-away for my STUDENTS:
Control: “Mastery of the mind over the complete control of the body.” Our thinking defines our behavior. When we come into our practice and learn to bond the mind and body, time seemingly stands still, and we let go of our daily distractions. We learn to befriend our body, to find joy in movement, to develop awareness of our body and its relationship to all around us. Control is not a rigid grasping, but rather a connection of concentrating our mind, centering in our body, and creating ease and efficiency.
Daily Takeaway: What is the alternative to being in control? Being out of control and being caught up in the drama of life is not a healthy lifestyle choice!

Mindfulness is essential in our everyday lives and daily Pilates practice. Zoey Trap provides six takeaways for mindfulness based on the Pilates Principles.

"First and foremost, Pilates teaches you the art of body awareness! Meaning, you will be taught how, and when to activate the correct muscle groups when doing a certain exercise. This can then be applied to your everyday life, whether it’s at work, at home, walking, running, cycling or doing any other sort of physical activity."

Back pain can be debilitating and if you suffer from it daily, any relief is welcomed. Luckily, Alex Richardson, founder of Duo Pilates is here to help.
