M2 Ingredients Raises the Bar Again with the Industry’s Lowest Heavy Metal Limits

This happens as brands see Prop 65 challenges with foreign supply.

Following our most recent review of historical data, we have further reduced our finished product specifications for heavy metals to levels up to 1,000× stricter than those used by other suppliers in the industry.

Heavy metal testing in mushroom ingredients can be a real issue across the industry. At M2 Ingredients, we engineered our cultivation system specifically to avoid the introduction of heavy metals in our products and deliver industry leading food safety standards.

Mushrooms are natural bioaccumulators, meaning they absorb pollutants from their surrounding environment, including heavy metals present in soil, air, water, or contaminated growing environments. When mushrooms are grown outdoors or in less controlled facilities, this can result in elevated heavy metal levels that may exceed Prop 65 thresholds in California.

At M2 Ingredients, our mushrooms are grown indoors in highly controlled, GMP environments, allowing us to carefully manage substrate, air quality, and water quality. This dramatically reduces environmental exposure and allows our ingredients to consistently test at extremely low levels of heavy metals.

This matters now more than ever. In the first months of 2026, many brands using foreign imported functional mushrooms are encountering heavy metal challenges in their supply chains.

Our story starts with our fearless founder, Dr. Sandra Carter. With a background in preventive medicine and a vision for how mushrooms could support human health, she helped create not just a company, but an entirely new vertical in the wellness industry. Alongside her business partner, mycologist Steve Farrar, she built M2 Ingredients from the ground up. We also believe in celebrating the men who champion and support female founders along the way, and Steve has been an incredible partner in that journey.

Today, Sandra continues to guide the company with the same clarity of purpose and commitment to science that started it all.

That vision carries forward with our Chief Science Officer, Dr. Julie Daoust, who represents the next generation of leadership in the mushroom industry. Julie is a science-first executive, a rigorous researcher, and a strategic leader helping move both our company and the broader category forward.

Because M2 Ingredients was founded by a woman and remains female-led, we approach business a little differently. We are not only led by women, we are led by female scientists.
