Jim and Nancy Schade founded Schadé Vineyard, just outside of Volga, near the town of Brookings, South Dakota, in 2000. At the time, Schadé Vineyard was one of only three wineries in the state of South Dakota. Today, it remains committed to growing and sourcing the finest local fruits to produce its distinctive wines.

Wednesday evening, we hosted a group of 7th graders for their communion milestone. They toured Schadé, walked out to the vineyard to pick grapes, and even got to try grape stomping before heading to the patio for their lesson. We even had a few parents join in!!
To finish the evening off, Jenn decided it was time to give grape stomping a try for herself!

**Grape stomping isn’t something we regularly offer, but we bring it back for this group as part of their communion milestone each year.

The elderberry plants started with pretty white flowers, which turned into clusters of green berries. Now, those berries are beginning to deepen in color just like the grapes! As they continue to ripen, they’ll darken even more until they’re almost black.
Friendly reminder: elderberries should not be eaten raw.
