It’s not often that The Buster runs into white vinyl dryer vent hose as it has been prohibited and widely discouraged for over 25 years. But occasionally I get a call to clean these type of vents and the only solution is replacement with 4” solid galvanized pipe. This customers dryer had blown the heating element 3 different times and could have easily turned into a dryer fire. Luckily she purchased a new dryer with a “vent sensor” that alerted her to the lack of airflow issue. Now the dryer vent is safe to use for years to come.

Got a call from my mother a few days ago that the dryer just quit and won’t restart. Sounds like a pro bono case for the LintBuster🤣 Upon closer inspection the first thing I found which I’ve seen many times is that the dryer pigtail was corroded and burnt looking. When I checked the receptacle on the wall I found the issue. The metal prongs that hold the dryer cord in place became loose over time and was making intermittent contact on one leg and maybe both. This is a dangerous condition and a cause of many dryer fires. This receptacle was installed with the house in 1979 so 44 years they got their moneys worth. After replacing the receptacle and the pigtail the dryer still did not work and it most likely damaged something internally and it was decided to replace the dryer with a quality used dryer from marketplace. It’s my recommendation to be sure and check your dryer cords and receptacles. It’s also a good idea to get your dryer vent cleaned if it has never been done or if you are experiencing long drying times.

This customer was planning to replace all of their attic insulation when they realized that their dryer vent was dumping lint into the attic. They realized this was a dangerous situation and also a fire hazard and who else would they call but LintBusters to remedy the situation. Now the dryer vent has been cleaned and the exhaust is blowing to the outdoors, which is much safer and up to code. Customer called and was selling his home and closing in 10 days. Buyer understandably wanted the dryer vent cleaned and vented outdoors. I told him the PVC pipe in wall is not code and would have to be replaced with metal pipe. It would involve some minor construction and also cutting a hole in the roof for a roof jack. I recommended a better option that was less expensive and safer in the long run for the new homeowners.

The best dryer vent is a short one and it gets no better than running it out of an exterior wall. It’s short, easy to clean, and it can be done by the homeowner yearly. I capped the PVC pipe at both ends and left it in the wall. Then cut a 4 1/8” hole in the wall to the back of the house and installed a metal wall vent.

This customer called and was wanting her dryer vent cleaned because it had been a year since she had it done. Little did she know that the dryer vent itself was in pieces in her attic, and the vent looked like it had never been cleaned before.  After cleaning out the pipes and putting them back together with heavy duty foil tape, the dryer is now exhausting to the outdoors and not into the attic. I also added metal straps for support.

This customer wanted the dryer vent cleaned and also to replace the slinky foil duct hose in the attic with hard pipe. While it’s better than just venting into open air, the slinky foil hose is not up to code when it comes to running thru the attic. The reason being is it will not contain a fire if there ever was one in the dryer vent. It also collects more lint over time than the smooth wall 4” galvanized pipe. Airflow before cleaning was 629 ft/min which is about half the recommended 1200 ft/min minimum. After cleaning and replacing the hose and the outside wall vent, airflow increased to 1417 ft/min, which is excellent. Clothes should dryer faster and the system is much safer and up to code.

This customer had their dryer vent blowing into their attic for 26 years.  I was contacted to install a DryerJack and run the vent up through the roof. They also told me a month ago that a company from the DFW area came and cleaned the dryer vent.  I went ahead and checked the vent just to be sure and it turns out they didn’t clean the vent at all, but still charged them full price for it. It is always wise to ask for photo documentation of work being done, but very few companies will do it.

Little before and after of a recent job. You never really know what you might find behind someone’s dryer.
