If you’ve dealt with stink bugs getting into your home in the past, now is the time to start preparing for them — before the activity really begins.
We’re at the end of August and heading into September, which gives homeowners a good window to get ahead of the problem. As we move through September and into October, stink bugs will begin looking for protected places to spend the winter. You’ll usually start noticing more of them as crops are harvested, leaves begin changing, days get shorter, and cooler weather settles in.
The key is to act before you start seeing them all over the outside of your house.
The most effective way to control stink bugs is to keep them from getting inside in the first place. Once they find their way into wall voids, attics, and other protected areas, they become much more difficult to deal with.
A few things you can do now:
• Seal cracks and gaps around windows and doors
• Replace worn weather stripping and door sweeps
• Repair damaged screens
• Seal around pipes, utility lines, cables, and other openings
• Check siding, soffits, fascia, rooflines, vents, and chimneys for gaps
• Pay extra attention to the sunny sides of the house, where stink bugs often gather on warm fall days
Exclusion is the best defense. Every opening you seal now is one less place for stink bugs to get inside later.
Another thing that can help is having the exterior of your home treated before stink bug activity picks up. A preventative exterior treatment provides an additional barrier they have to cross as they begin searching for a way inside.
It’s also important to know that a treatment will not stop you from seeing stink bugs outside. They can swarm homes in large numbers during the fall, so you may still see plenty of activity on the siding, windows, and doors.
The goal of the treatment is to help reduce the number that successfully make it inside and, in turn, reduce the number you may see emerging indoors throughout the winter and early spring.
If stink bugs have been a problem at your house in previous years, don’t wait until you’re seeing them everywhere. Now is the time to get ahead of them.
Seal up the openings, take care of preventative treatment early, and make your house a little less inviting before stink bugs start looking for their winter home.
