Fleas can become a big problem fast—especially this time of year around Evansville and Newburgh.

Fleas thrive in warm weather, and late summer can be prime time for activity. They can hitch a ride inside on pets, clothing, or even wildlife that spends time around the yard. Once indoors, they can spread into carpets, furniture, pet bedding, and cracks in flooring. Flea bites can be irritating for both people and pets, and heavy infestations can be especially stressful because their life cycle allows new fleas to keep emerging even after the adults are noticed.

If your pets are scratching more than usual or you’re noticing small bites around the ankles and lower legs, fleas may be the culprit. They’re tiny, fast, and very good at hiding—but once they get established, they can turn into a much bigger issue than most people expect.

If you’ve dealt with stink bugs getting into your home in the past, now is the time to start preparing for them — before the activity really begins.

We’re at the end of August and heading into September, which gives homeowners a good window to get ahead of the problem. As we move through September and into October, stink bugs will begin looking for protected places to spend the winter. You’ll usually start noticing more of them as crops are harvested, leaves begin changing, days get shorter, and cooler weather settles in.

The key is to act before you start seeing them all over the outside of your house.

The most effective way to control stink bugs is to keep them from getting inside in the first place. Once they find their way into wall voids, attics, and other protected areas, they become much more difficult to deal with.

A few things you can do now:

• Seal cracks and gaps around windows and doors
• Replace worn weather stripping and door sweeps
• Repair damaged screens
• Seal around pipes, utility lines, cables, and other openings
• Check siding, soffits, fascia, rooflines, vents, and chimneys for gaps
• Pay extra attention to the sunny sides of the house, where stink bugs often gather on warm fall days

Exclusion is the best defense. Every opening you seal now is one less place for stink bugs to get inside later.

Another thing that can help is having the exterior of your home treated before stink bug activity picks up. A preventative exterior treatment provides an additional barrier they have to cross as they begin searching for a way inside.

It’s also important to know that a treatment will not stop you from seeing stink bugs outside. They can swarm homes in large numbers during the fall, so you may still see plenty of activity on the siding, windows, and doors.

The goal of the treatment is to help reduce the number that successfully make it inside and, in turn, reduce the number you may see emerging indoors throughout the winter and early spring.

If stink bugs have been a problem at your house in previous years, don’t wait until you’re seeing them everywhere. Now is the time to get ahead of them.

Seal up the openings, take care of preventative treatment early, and make your house a little less inviting before stink bugs start looking for their winter home.

WAIT… THAT STICK HAS LEGS?!

One of our customers sent us this awesome photo of a walkingstick, and we had to share it!

These insects are seriously cool. Walkingsticks have one of the best disguises in nature—their long, slender bodies and legs make them look almost exactly like a twig. Some will even sway back and forth as they move, helping them look like a small branch blowing in the wind. Talk about taking camouflage seriously!

And here's another cool thing about this Indiana native:

It's not really a pest.

Walkingsticks are harmless to people and homes, and finding one around your property usually isn't something that requires treatment.

That's an important part of what we do. Pest control isn't about spraying everything with six legs. It's about knowing what you're looking at and knowing when something actually needs to be controlled.

So this incredible little master of disguise?

No treatment needed. Carry on, little stick.

Next time you're outside, take a second look at those twigs… one of them might look back.

Roaches are more than just an unpleasant surprise—they can become a real health and sanitation concern inside your home.

Around Evansville and Newburgh, warm summer weather can keep cockroach activity high, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, garages, and other areas where they can find moisture, food, and shelter. Roaches can contaminate surfaces and food, leave behind droppings and shed skins, and some species can spread bacteria as they move through unsanitary areas and then across countertops, cabinets, and other surfaces.

One of the biggest problems with cockroaches is that seeing one can sometimes mean there are many more hiding nearby. They reproduce quickly and spend much of their time tucked away in cracks, behind appliances, inside cabinets, and other dark spaces. If you’re starting to notice roaches regularly, it may be a sign that the population is becoming established.

August in Southwest Indiana, means bald-faced hornets and yellow jackets are getting busy.

By this point in the summer, their colonies have had months to grow, so homeowners around Evansville and Newburgh may suddenly notice much more activity around the yard. Bald-faced hornets are known for their large gray, paper-like nests in trees, shrubs, and around structures, while yellow jackets often stay hidden underground, inside wall voids, around landscaping, or beneath decks and other protected areas.

Late summer is also when these colonies can be especially defensive. A nest near a driveway, porch, playground, mowing area, or other high-traffic spot can create a serious sting hazard for your family, pets, visitors, and anyone working around the property. Yellow jackets hidden inside a structure can sometimes become noticeable indoors as well.
