Suffolk County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services wants to remind everyone about New York State's Move Over Law.

The law requires drivers to move over one lane, when possible, and slow down when approaching flashing lights, construction vehicles, emergency vehicles, or a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.

Moving over and slowing down helps protect drivers, pedestrians, construction workers, first responders, and everyone working alongside our roadways.

Don't risk a life or a ticket. Move over, slow down, and help keep Suffolk County safe.

Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services just wants to remind everyone of New York State's Move Over law.

The law says that for police cars, ambulances, tow trucks, construction, fire trucks, other EMS and emergency vehicles, and disabled vehicles on the side of the road, you must move over a lane or slow down. This helps protect anyone who works along our roadways as well as drivers. Whether they are flashing lights behind you or pulled over to the side at work, you must move over for them and/or slow down.

Help keep our roads safe.

🎒🚌 Back to School means more traffic, more pedestrians, and more school buses on the road!

As students head back to the classroom, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert, and share the road safely.

🚗 Slow down in school zones and watch for pedestrians.
🚌 Stop for school buses when their stop signs and red lights are activated.
🚶 Look both ways and use crosswalks when crossing the street.
⏰ Prepare for extra traffic and give yourself more time for your commute.

A few extra seconds of caution can make a big difference in keeping our children, families, and communities safe. ❤️

Today, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services joins communities across the nation in recognizing National Overdose Awareness Day and remembering those we have lost to overdose while supporting those who are struggling.

Knowing the signs of an overdose, calling 911 immediately, and administering naloxone (Narcan) when available can make the difference between life and death. Never be afraid to call for help, there is no shame in asking for help, and one call can save a life.

Let’s continue to educate, support, and look out for one another. Together, we can help prevent overdoses and build a safer, stronger Suffolk County.

Prevent overdose. Save lives. No one fights alone. 💜

What You Need to Know about E-Bike Safety:
1. You must be 16 or older
2. You must wear a helmet no matter your age
3. Use the roadway, sidewalks are for pedestrians
4. Follow traffic laws just like you would in a car

Follow Suffolk County laws when riding a vehicle and arrive safely.

WRFD stands by for NY State FD Drill Team Competition in South Hempstead

On Saturday, August 15, The New York State Fire Department Drill Team Championship event was hosted by the South Hempstead Fire Department. During the all-day tournament, 26 teams from across NY State competed in 8 different motorized and non-motorized events.
During the event, members of Wading River Fire Department stood by with Engine 11, covering the Sout Hempstead Fire District for the day.
Wading River FD would like to Congratulate the NYS 2026 Drill Team Champions, the Central Islip FD Hoboes!
We would also like to Congratulate the other top teams: 2) East Islip FD Guzzlers 3) Spencerport FD Red Onions 4) South Hempstead FD Rascals 5) Miller Place FD Extinguishers.
Congratulations to Chief of Department Michael Spatz, Assistant Chef Eric McEvoy and the entire South Hempstead FD and Rascals drill team on your 4th place finish!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist atrocities that occurred on September 11, 2001. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration is partnering with Carry the Load to host a Patriot Day National Day of Service and Remembrance at VA national cemeteries to honor the lives tragically lost in the 9/11 attacks and the Veterans, Servicemembers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and other first responders who served and sacrificed for the nation on September 11, 2001, and in the years since. Volunteers should register via https://www.cem.va.gov/CEM/National-Day-of-Service/.

Calverton National Cemetery will host a ceremony on Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the assembly area, after which volunteers will spend a few hours helping to w**d mulched planting beds. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and a small hand tool for pulling w**ds; the cemetery will have buckets on hand. Thank you for participating in the Patriot Day National Day of Service and Remembrance in whatever way you can.
