The tip of Gugeegu island ~ who out there recognizes this view? It’s just past the old father hacker high school. I’m missing this place and my family and kiddos over there extra this week as March 1st quickly approaches...

On March 1, 1954, the United States tested its most powerful hydrogen bomb at 15 megatons, code named Castle Bravo. The plutonium and ionizing radiation weapons were detonated upon Bikini and Enewetak Atolls in the Marshall Islands. In generations to come, people have been displaced, their food security lost, and have experienced (and continue to experience) other chronic health conditions as an outcome of the nuclear era. The resilience and strength of nuclear frontline communities who are continuing to fight for dignity and respect must be upheld by these important, often overlooked stories towards justice. Everyone, especially American citizens, should know the truth and hear these testimonies about our history in these islands.

So please JOIN US in commemorating this history through an entire week of virtual events hosted by and the Marshallese communities in Spokane Washington and back in the RMI. You can RSVP for this event on the CANN Washington website ~ https://www.cann-wa.us/our-work 🙌🏽 It will be a powerful, packed week and I hope to see many of you there!!! Kommol tata PC:

💙 A day in the life 💙at the Ebeye Spartan Summer camp. Usually I’d be heading over there for the whole month of July. This year since I can’t be with them, I’ll be sharing stories and information in hopes of truly reaching some of you instead. ✨ I am so lucky to be able to hang out with the most amazing kids every day, teach them all about marine science and management, and inspire them to be Leaders for their families, peers and communities. They inspire me to be fiercely present and flexible amidst challenge and change. ✨ Amidst the current situation now, more than ever, I encourage you to open your mind and heart and LEARN about these islands, these people, and our collective history. The Marshall Islands is still an “insular island territory” of the United States. Our largest missile firing army installation is literally a stones throw away from this place. More people from these islands live both here in Oahu, throughout Hawaii and all over the mainland than most realize. There are prevalent issues around discrimination and misplaced judgement and blame that, in my opinion, stem from a serious lack of both interest and understanding. ✨ So, are you curious? Are you committed to learning and growing into a more aware and compassionate being? Start by learning about and practicing inclusivity towards people who you wouldn’t normally spend time with, the people who wouldn’t normally “check the boxes” of who you’d reach out to and why. Get out of your own head and world for a bit - especially if it’s all sunshine and rainbows - and immerse into someone else’s. I promise it builds character and humility. Its time to wake up.

Here are some Kosrae island vibes for your Aloha Saturday. ✨ Shot at the 2019 Yoga Empowerment Retreat in Kosrae, this is one of my favorite days ~ the cultural immersion and exchange day. 🙌🏽 Here we have our amazing friend (and Chef and fisherman and much more) Harrison making “fafa” which is similar to pa’i’ai in texture, but rolled into little balls and topped with a sweet coconut sugar sauce. 😋😍🥰 I hope one day some of you will join me in learning about this amazing place! There is more info on my website under Events if you’re interested. Also, has teamed up with me for these retreats!! She teaches free diving courses and skills as well as yoga and breath work. We are hoping for a possible Thanksgiving-ish retreat this year....IF it is safe and practical. What do you guys think?? Are you joansin to travel as much as I am?! Sending love to our dear friends and hosts and all the loved staff there as well. We miss you guys!!!

These are some of the boys I work with in Ebeye, practicing a traditional Marshallese fishing method under the guidance of an elder Master Fisher and Weaver - Joel. As an educator, my goal is first to understand and love these kids like they’re my own, second to form a relationship based on trust and respect, and third to inspire them around taking care of their ocean and it’s bounty. By connecting to their ancestors and a tradition like this, coupled with learning marine science methods of studying coral reef health and abundance, these kids are EMPOWERED as Leaders of their land, their ocean home, their families and community. They are soooooo inspiring and I’m grateful and lucky to work with them every summer. Even though I won’t be with them in person this year, I’m there in spirit guys!!! See you all soon enough. In the meantime kommol tatta for sharing your hearts and your home with me.
