The ring-necked pheasant is probably my favorite species of bird to work on. Beautiful colors on all sides of these birds. It makes it hard to decide on poses because you want to show it all off. Of course it always makes my job easier and more enjoyable when I have a mature fully plumed specimen that isnt shot up to work on as well!!!

Finished up this nice Dall ram. He will be hung high on the customers wall so I altered the head to look down some and turned out into the room.

Getting a few calls so figured I should post this. Ifyou are going on a western big game hunt especially a DIY hunt like for elk, moose, deer, etc you really need to know how to cape the animal not just down to the head but all the way off the skull. With the warm temps and many hours from home, leaving the headstill in, you are asking for slippage and spoilage problems.

Youtube how to skin out the head or go visit with your taxidermist before you go to get a lesson and instruction. A little preparedness of what to do after the kill goes a long ways in getting your trophy preserved and saving you money by not having to buy a new cape because you made a preventable mistake.

Also it is always best to use dry ice and not regular ice if you can. Dry ice will freeze the hide and when it melts, it evaporates with no water mess. If dry ice isnt available then of course use regular ice but bag the cape and keep it dry as possible. Water just speeds up bacteria growth.

Well deer season officially starts tomorrow. With all the YouTube videos and other info online this should never be a problem, however it is every year. Save these, share them, tell a friend. Nothing will make your taxidermist mad faster than a messed up cape job. Truly should never he a problem anymore but it still is.

Below is pics on where to cut and where not too. In the 1st pic, the "B" cut needs to be down at the knees. I am perfectly fine if you make the "C" cut on November and December killed deer. It makes it easier to cape them down and not leave so much neck meat on the cape. If a September or early October killed deer I would prefer you not to make the "C" cut because the hair is so short and harder to hide the seam.

When in doubt refer to these, call, or better yet gut the deer and take it in whole on the carcass to your taxidermist and let them cape it for you. Please, please, if you are not sure, don't make the cut and destroy a good cape. They are too hard to replace these days.

Not the greatest pic but something different. Chukar and Hungarian partridge with an elk shed base

The ocellated turkey has the ugliest head of the turkeys of the world but also has the prettiest feather coloration. Other than not being able to see the massive spurs these birds get, this flying pose in my opinion shows offthe colors of these birds the best
