DEI After 5 is back with Season 13!! And we are coming out of the gate fast with our guest, Dr. Evelyn Carter, author of Was That Racist?

Together, we unpack the difference between racial bias and racism, how current events reveal deeper patterns of exclusion, and why understanding history helps us better understand the present. The conversation also touches on voting access, gender, policy, and the importance of asking better questions when something feels “off.”

Be sure to follow DEI After 5 on YouTube, Substack, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts! This and every episode drops at 5:15 p.m. ET every Tuesday.

Why does the word accountability make so many people tense up? Honestly, it feels like it’s become a four-letter word in our professional lives—synonymous with punishment or getting in trouble. But what if we completely flipped that narrative?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how we can shift the perspective on accountability from something that tears us down to a partnership that builds us up. When we reframe feedback and accountability as a gift rather than a weapon, everything changes. It’s not about policing performance; it’s about creating space for real learning and growth. Let’s stop using it against each other and start using it to empower one another.

What if the biggest challenge facing new managers isn't leadership...it's preparation?

I've been coaching emerging people leaders across a variety of industries, and I keep hearing the same thing:

"I don't think anyone prepared me for this."

That conversation inspired my upcoming FREE Executive Briefing:

Over the past year, I've noticed a pattern that I can no longer ignore.

I've been coaching talented, thoughtful people leaders across industries, and many have shared the same thing:

"I don't think anyone prepared me for this."

Not for leading people.
Not for navigating difficult conversations.
Not for building trust, managing team dynamics, or balancing the expectations of leadership with the needs of their teams.

They're not struggling because they lack potential.

They're struggling because they weren't prepared for one of the biggest transitions of their careers.

The more I hear these stories, the more convinced I become that organizations don't have a leadership development problem.

We have a leadership preparedness problem.

That's the conversation I want to have during my upcoming Executive Briefing:
Why Great Employees Become Struggling Managers: The Leadership Transition Organizations Aren't Preparing People For

If you're in HR, Talent Development, Learning & Development, or you lead people leaders, I'd love for you to join us.

We'll explore:
✔ Why the transition into people leadership is more challenging than most organizations realize.
✔ The hidden gap between leadership development and leadership preparedness.
✔ Practical ways to better prepare emerging people leaders before challenges become crises.

Ever feel like you need to control every single aspect of your journey to ensure success? What if that very need for control is the invisible ceiling holding you back?

The reality is that personal influence is limited, but collective impact is limitless. True leadership isn't about micro-managing every detail; it’s about acknowledging the boundaries of one's own control and shifting focus toward empowering those around you. When ambitious goals meet a team that is trusted, delegated to, and fully invested in the mission, the trajectory of success shifts entirely. Scaling a vision doesn't happen by doing more; it happens by letting go of the reins and fueling the people who help turn that dream into a reality.

We often walk past dozens of people every single day, completely caught up in our own worlds. But there is a heartbreaking, life-changing truth buried in this story: a single smile or a simple hello could be the difference between someone giving up and someone choosing to keep going. This powerful reminder about the impact of truly seeing one another is something I think we all need to hold onto a little tighter.

Let’s make it a point to acknowledge the people around us—you never know who needs to feel seen today.

Ever had one of those moments where you look at your kid’s homework assignment and just… stop? This week's guest, Pooja Kothari, didn't sugarcoat it. When her child asked what propaganda meant, she didn't give some textbook definition. She told them the truth: sometimes, the system just doesn't tell you the whole story. She's raising her kids to question everything, even what comes home in their school bags.

Do you hold back the tough conversations, or do you dive right in? Let’s talk about it.

Last week was a whirlwind! In addition to a few ongoing client projects and preparing for graduation season, for the 2nd year, I have had the pleasure of kicking off the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Board of Directors meeting here in DC. This year’s topic: Accountability Without Fear,” where we focused on next-level questions for clearer oversight, better information, and stronger follow-through.

You know the message lands when a board member says, “Can you stay the whole weekend? We love having you with us!”

Then I had the opportunity to speak to a class at the University of the District of Columbia on entrepreneurship. After sharing my journey with them, I gave them my P.L.A.N.S. Framework - Purpose, Limitations, Actions, Network, and Self-Care. Thank you, , for the invitation!
