Science working as it should…

HISTORY

Danish Physician Hans Christian Hagedorn discovers the action of insulin can be prolonged with the addition of protamine in 1936, which ultimately became known as NPH Insulin. This means that people with diabetes can have fewer injections. NPH insulin was not marketed and available until 1946.

On January 11, 1922, Leonard Thompson became the first person to receive insulin treatment, transforming a fatal diagnosis of type 1 diabetes into a manageable condition.

His courage, along with the groundbreaking work of Dr. Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip, and John Macleod, paved the way for millions of people like us to live longer, healthier lives.

Today, we honor the science, the progress, and the lives saved.

ACTION ALERT: Protect Healthcare Coverage Access.

Send our pre-written letter with an option to add your own personal message here:
https://diabetespatientadvocacycoalition.quorum.us/campaign/ACAletter/

We are working with the Partnership to Protect Coverage (PPC) to deliver this important message: for people with diabetes who rely on the Enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credit (eAPTC) for coverage, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Without the eAPTC, millions of people will see SIGNIFICANTLY higher insurance premiums.

When it comes to prescription drugs, your formulary matters. 📋💊

A formulary is the list of medications your health plan covers. The formulary is decided by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs).

Knowing what’s included can save you surprise costs and help you plan your care.

County Executive Marc Elrich among those testifying to the state prescription drug board about the need to rein in costs.

09/23/2025

The most recent reported cost of diagnosed diabetes (not including pre-diabetes) in the US is $412.9 billion: $306.6 billion in direct medical costs and $106.3 billion in indirect costs like lost work and productivity.

This number has increased by $80 billion in just a decade.

When diabetes is managed early, we not only reduce the risk of complications — we cut down the costs that come with them.
