Today is Safety Tuesday of National EMS Week!

On this Safety Tuesday, AMU K9 recognizes the vital role safety plays when treating and handling working dogs in the pre-hospital environment.

We live by a simple truth: “An injured dog is an unpredictable dog.” When a K9 is hurt, stress, pain, and confusion can change behavior in an instant. That is why safe care starts with awareness, patience, and control.

Communication is key.

Clear dialogue with the K9’s Handler helps responders understand the dog’s training, triggers, and best approach. At the same time, reading the dog’s body language is just as important. Every movement, posture, and expression can tell you what the K9 is feeling and how to respond safely.

Protecting these working dogs means protecting the teams who depend on them. It takes skilled responders, informed handlers, and a shared commitment to doing the job right.
