Commerce Awards Walla Walla Public Schools Nearly $1.3 Million for Energy-Efficient Lighting Upgrades

Walla Walla Public Schools has been awarded nearly $1.3 million in grant funding from the Washington State Department of Commerce to enhance indoor and outdoor lighting at Edison Elementary, Sharpstein Elementary, and Green Park Elementary. The district is one of 70 building owners across Washington to receive Clean Buildings Performance Grant funding, supporting efforts to improve energy efficiency and comply with the state’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard (CBPS).

The grant will fund a variety of energy-saving building retrofits, including:
• Upgrading lighting to efficient LEDs
• Modernizing heating and cooling systems
• Implementing smart building controls to optimize energy use
• Developing compliance documentation, such as energy benchmarking reports, operations and maintenance plans, and energy management strategies

“This exciting grant opportunity allows us to invest in both the student learning environment and responsible energy use,” said Facilities and Operations Director Robert Foster.

Installation of the new lighting systems is set to begin this spring, with completion expected over the summer break. These upgrades will provide students and staff with improved classroom lighting while reducing energy costs and environmental impact.

For more information about the Clean Buildings Performance Standard and the Energy Audits for Public Buildings Program, visit the Washington State Department of Commerce website. https://www.commerce.wa.gov/
