I couldn't be more excited for Owen Roe Winery to again be under the ownership and leadership my good friend and former METIS llc client David O'Reilly.

Owen Roe, Yakima Valley, Washington Winery renamed Owen Roe Estate David and Angelica O’Reilly, who founded Yakima Valley’s Owen Roe in 1999, have purchased the winery in the Vintage Wine Estates (VWE) asset sale. The purchase includes the winery, house on the property, two vineyards, inventory,...

The Rocks District of Milton Freewater AVA produces the most distinctive wines in North America. We know that sounds like a grand claim, but it’s simply true. There is no other terroir in the US as consistently sensorily unique and evident in the wines. Love it or not, Rocks wines are shockingly unique. This tiny AVA also happens to be the source of the most 100pt wines in the PNW.

Prime vineyards here rarely come available. METIS llc doesn’t normally trade in small vineyards, but due to the specialness of this place we’ve put together an assortment of four small, ultra-premium vineyards that are available for acquisition (individually or collectively).

Qualified buyers may email [email protected] if you’d like to sign a NDA and learn more.

Congratulations to the Ackley family and the Griessel family. We are grateful my team at METIS was chosen to shepherd Betz Family Winery into its next chapter of ownership, with Louis Skinner remaining as winemaker and founder Bob Betz remaining as Consulting Winemaker.

Seattle-based Ackley Brands has purchased Washington’s Betz Family Winery from Steve and Bridgit Griessel. The sale includes SuNu, which is a Willamette Valley-focused brand, and The Untold Story. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. "Betz is an iconic, historic, heritage brand," says Ackley Bran...

Wow! 100 points is a feat most winemakers barely dare to hope for in their career. We are so proud of our friends Dan and Amy Wampfler and METIS llc client Abeja Winery and Inn.

Abeja Skysill

Today we present one of the most exciting new projects from the Pacific Northwest that I have tasted in the past year. The Skysill Vineyard is located in the Mill Creek region of the Walla Walla Valley, planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The original plantings were 40 acres and 27 more acres were planted last year. This site was originally purchased by Ken Harrison back in 2013.
Amy and Dan Wampfler have been working with this vineyard since 2011. Chardonnay was planted with Bordeaux varietals as Dan Wampfler noted “Cold Creek and Canoe Ridge are perfect examples where you can do this and these are world class varietals from a world-class vineyard and now you are seeing a clamoring for Chardonnay in the Mill Creek region.” He stated “Mill Creek is great for Chardonnay because of the elevation, you have air drainage and slope and soil. One of the cool differentiation is that the Missoula floods went to 1300 feet and this is above the flood plane of the Missoula floods. A different soil type, more pure windswept Loess.” He explained that the vineyard elevation ranges from 1400-1500 feet, with the majority being southwest facing on a slope. There are massive diurnal shifts at this site. “Temperatures warm up faster here and cool down more here than downtown with the mountain breeze” Wampfler said.

2022 Abeja ‘Skysill Estate Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The 2022 ‘Skysill Estate Vineyard’ Chardonnay is a blend of three clones. This was stored in mostly new French oak (light toast levels) before bottling. The nose is incredible with toasty oak, marshmallow, Meyer lemon blossom and suggestions of baking spice dusted brioche. The palate is incredible and beautifully textured, with amazing viscosity and length. This is very Washington vs. Montrachet, in terms of weight, mouthfeel and depth. The finish just won’t quit and lasts for a minute. This is an astonishingly good wine that is truly a benchmark Washington Chardonnay. Drink 2024-2036- 97

2020 Abeja ‘Skysill Estate Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon- 100% varietal, the world-class 2020 Abeja ‘Skysill Estate Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon comes from this site farmed at less than 2.5 tons per acre, with very compact clusters and berry size due to the wind at this site. Stored in mainly new French oak, this was bottled in July 2023. Very inky in the glass, this reveals layers of sagebrush, violet rose petals and pencil lead alongside toasty oak, dark currants and suggestions of Asian spices. The intoxicating aromatics bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The palate is very seamless throughout the drinking experience. The length, weight and tension in the wine is astonishingly good as this flirts with perfection. A total stunner, congrats to the winemaking team of Amy and Dan Wampler. No reason to cellar this incredible wine that is truly one of the finest Washington wines made in the 2020 vintage. Tasted on two separate occasions, give this at least two hours in the decanter if enjoying now. Drink 2024-2033- 100

A tale of two industries. One thriving, one in decline. The path forward for growth will be leaning into the space between.

Let’s drop the narrative that Washington wine is struggling. Sure, some of the Big winery struggles tell a statistically somber story, but they are outnumbers by the hundreds of small and medium winery success stories. Wineries in aggregate are doing mich better than the state is on “average”.

The future of growth in Washington, fortunately, lies where Washington is uniquely most capable of competing. The $15-$30 segments are showing the most growth in the US. Most of Washington’s struggles are below these prices. Most of Washington’s current successes are at or above these prices. Washington is structurally and viticulturally more capable of profitiably producing the outstanding quality wines between $15 and $30 than anywhere in the country.

If Washington is to collectively return to growth it will be driven by those who are willing to produce the volumes and do the work to take share in the national market in the segments that are healthy and growing. Truly, there is no place better positioned to do so.

Most of you know that METIS llc has served the Pacific Northwest wine industry for nearly 7 years now. Did you know that we officially launched a complimentary, dedicated practice serving the Hospitality Industry? We've successfully sold several Hotel and Resort properties the past couple of years, and just last week sold a group of three highly successful restaurants.

Here is the story in the local paper. https://www.union-bulletin.com/news/local/business/new-culinary-custodians-trio-of-walla-walla-restaurants-change-owners/article_d9b9118a-5bc1-11ee-a9c2-3f19196c4111.html

Oregon continues to outperform other wine regions. Combine that with the considerations for climate and culture, Oregon is a great place to invest.
