Turtle Fact of the Week!

New research has found that by adding LED lights to fisherman's nets they can reduce accidental bycatch by 40 to 74%. Sea turtles rely heavily on sight. The glowing LED lights create a visual warning that allows turtles to treat fishing nets as a hazard.

This does not reduce the fisherman's haul. As most commercial fish do not change their behavior around the lights. Trials show that it even reduces accidental capture of a variety of other marine animals.

A simple technique that has a big impact on our ocean's health.

Walking through the Vineyards up on Red Mountain ahead of the 2026 Harvest. Today we check out the Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Revisit some of the Cabernet Sauvignon within the Quintessence vineyards.

Probably the worst smoke day of the year. At least I hope. We will be back up next week to see if the smoke has cleared. I am very hopeful that the smoke will clear out before doing much if any damage to the growing season.

Honu is the Hawaiian word for Turtle

We have partnered with Mālama i nā Honu to help support their mission to protect nesting sea turtles and provide community outreach to Hawaiian beachgoers.

We have added a donation to our limited edition Magnums including our 2022 Reserve Chardonnay, 2021 Mourvèdre, & our 2021 Leatherback Syrah. Each magnum comes with a $20 built in donation to the organization that we at Turtle match; meaning each bottle provides $40 to help save the sea turtles. Got to visit my friends Beth and Leonard over at Lacewing Cellars last night. Their tasting room is officially open! Lacewing Cellars

They are named after the Green Lacewing a beneficial vineyard predator that protects wine grapes from pests.

Beth and Leonard are both graduates of the Viticulture and Enology program. They are excellent winemakers and you should definitly go check them out!

Turtle Fact of the Week!

The Mata Mata turtle has one of the most unique feeding styles. As it remains motionless in the water, its skin blends into the surrounding vegetation until a fish comes close. The Mata Mata thrusts out its head and opens its mouth as wide as possible, creating a low-pressure vacuum that sucks the prey in, known as suction feeding. The mouth snaps shut, water is expelled, and the fish is swallowed whole, the Mata Mata cannot chew due to the way its mouth is constructed.
