New allegations of wage fraud and labor violations have surfaced involving contractors working on the new LBJ Hospital project in northeast Houston.

According to labor unions and worker advocates, more than 170 workers may have been underpaid or denied benefits while working on the taxpayer-funded hospital expansion project. Allegations include unpaid prevailing wages, withheld vacation and medical benefits, worker intimidation, and employees allegedly being pressured to sign paperwork claiming they had been fully paid.

The disputed amount is estimated to be nearly half a million dollars. Harris Health officials say they are investigating the claims and have hired a third-party auditor to review payroll records tied to the project.

The new Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital replacement facility is part of Harris Health’s multi-billion-dollar bond program approved by voters and is expected to serve northeast Houston for decades to come.

At this time, no criminal charges have been announced, and the construction project remains ongoing.
