Derby FD – RIT Operations Night

This week Signal 73 had the opportunity to work with members of Derby FD for an evening focused on Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations and firefighter rescue skills.

The night began with a review and hands-on use of the RIT pack, discussing deployment considerations and air management for downed firefighter emergencies. Members then moved into packaging and movement techniques utilizing the FAST Board, focusing on securing and efficiently moving a downed firefighter through realistic environments.

Training scenarios progressed into victim movement and removal up stairwells, emphasizing communication, teamwork, and efficient movement under difficult conditions. Members also worked through high-point operations and techniques designed to overcome obstacles commonly encountered during firefighter rescue situations.

RIT is much more than standing by with equipment — it requires constant training, repetition, and understanding how to efficiently solve problems under stress. Great work by all members who came out and put in the work throughout the evening.

If your department is interested in Rapid Intervention Team training ranging from basic through advanced firefighter rescue operations, contact Josh or visit Signal73Fire.com

Thank you Derby FD and the members from Ansonia FD for attending!!!

South Salem FD Drill Night – Vehicle Fire Operations

This week members of South Salem FD conducted a hands-on vehicle fire training drill focused on basic fire attack and operational considerations encountered at motor vehicle fires. Members reviewed apparatus placement, hose line selection, approach considerations, and hazards commonly associated with modern vehicles.

Training evolutions allowed members to practice proper positioning and fire attack techniques while discussing scene size-up, exposure concerns, and overall incident management. Drills like these provide an opportunity to reinforce the fundamentals and ensure members remain proficient in handling incidents encountered on a regular basis.

Consistent training on basic skills helps build confidence, maintain proficiency, and ensure members are prepared when the call comes in. Looking to bring this to your agency, contact Josh and get the ball rollin…..

Full-Day Machinery Rescue Training in Tarrytown

This past weekend we were in Westchester County spending the day with the members of the Tarrytown Fire Department for a full 8-hour Machinery Rescue program. Machinery rescue incidents are low-frequency but high-risk calls that demand strong technical skills, problem solving, and the ability to operate efficiently in tight and unforgiving environments.

The morning began with a classroom discussion and tool lab reviewing the equipment commonly utilized during machinery rescue incidents. Members had the opportunity to go hands-on with various tools and equipment while discussing operational considerations, patient care concerns, scene hazards, and disentanglement techniques prior to moving into practical scenarios.

The remainder of the day focused on hands-on skill stations and scenario-based training centered around realistic emergencies companies may encounter on the street. Throughout the program, members worked through multiple stations including:• Ring removal techniques• Floor drain and confined entrapment scenarios• Snow blower entanglement incidents• Meat grinder rescue operations• Breaking and breaching concrete to access trapped victims• Roller and crush injury scenarios utilizing the Gorilla Press prop to simulate industrial entrapments

Students worked through disentanglement techniques, tool selection, victim packaging, patient care considerations, and coordinated removal operations while emphasizing firefighter safety and limiting further injury to the victim.

One of the highlights of the day was utilizing the Gorilla Press prop to simulate realistic roller and crush injury incidents. Members were challenged to work through complex extrication problems requiring communication, coordination, and precision operations under pressure. We thank the officers and membership of the Tarrytown FD for having us out for the day and continuing to prioritize realistic, hands-on training for their members.

Joint Burn in New Haven for Multiple Westchester Departments

Last Saturday, Ossining, Briarcliff Manor, Millwood, Dobbs Ferry, & Croton-on-Hudson all headed north on I-95 for a joint live burn in New Haven. Many of these agencies regularly operate together on 10-75’s and greater alarm assignments, making this the perfect opportunity for coordinated box alarm drills and realistic fireground scenarios.

The day began with companies rotating through 6 different stations and evolutions designed to challenge members in multiple aspects of engine, truck, and search operations.

Scenario 1: Basement Fires
Scenario 2: Basement Fire Forcible Entry with Basement Search
Scenario 3: Vent, Enter, Search (VES) with 2nd Floor Search
Scenario 4: Flat Roof Ventilation
Scenario 5: Peaked Roof Ventilation from the Tower Ladder Bucket
Scenario 6: 2nd Floor Fire Operations

The day wrapped up with multiple box alarm drills that combined all of the day’s skills into coordinated multi-company operations. Trainings like this — especially live burns involving multiple departments — are becoming more common, and for good reason. Beyond the ability to split costs between agencies, the real value comes from building trust, communication, and operational consistency among departments that may end up working side-by-side when the next box drops.

Summer is here and the calendar is already filling into the fall. Get those training schedules locked in and budgets put to work. Reach out to Josh and see what Signal 73 Fire Training can bring to your department to keep your members street ready for the next one.

Back in Briarcliff for EV/Lithium-Ion Battery Emergencies

Last night, Instructor Doyle was in Westchester with the Briarcliff Manor FD delivering our Electric Vehicle & Lithium-Ion Battery Emergencies program. Bryan’s knowledge and commitment to instructing the service on these situations and emergencies is one of the best in the business.

As we are seeing these incidents more and more whether on the roadway, in a driveway, or inside a structure, these are not your typical fires. These situations demand a different mindset and approach. The instruction is based on what’s actually being encountered on the street right now.

The class covered:
• EV identification & vehicle anatomy
• Lithium-ion battery behavior and thermal runaway
• Fire attack considerations & limitations
• Cooling vs. extinguishment tactics
• Strut hazards, re-ignition concerns, and long-term monitoring
• Real-world street considerations from companies actively dealing with these incidents

Briarcliff’s commitment to continuing to expand on their agencies training and knowledge is exceptional. We appreciate the continued trust and opportunity to instruct and prepare your department for whatever might be encountered on the next run. Shout out to our boy Teddy for the pics.

If your agency hasn’t started tackling EV & lithium-ion incidents and preparing your selves, now’s the time. These types of lectures and classes are perfect for training nights. Reach out to Josh at: [email protected] to bring this program to your department.
