Don’t do this!! I am often asked about lighting front doors and entry ways. While it’s tempting to place a light a few feet back and shine in the door, you will create a hazard. When someone opens the door they are blinded and it makes it hard to navigate out of the house. The better options here are to graze the two pillars or to use a hanging light like the HL100/200 under the overhang.

Sometimes you make friends in transformers! Helping a contractor review an old, non working system yesterday we found this little guy inside. I used to find mice often, but this was my first frog. Have an old system that you’re not sure what is salvageable on? I can help!

Secured networks for the BT line of fixtures. We had two houses with our BT lights on this street. Even though they were a little ways apart they were still picking up each other’s lights. I say there three reasons to use a secured network:
1. Increases communication between the fixtures.
2. Ensures that only you are controlling your lights.
3. Separates “twins”, two lights being controlled by one icon.

Always use a secured network!

Finish issue or buildup? Give it the scrape test. If you can “scrape” the sediment off with your fingernail and the finish looks good underneath it’s not a finish issue. This is great test to tell if the fixtures need to be cleaned, or if there is a problem. We were called out to check these hats that the homeowner thought the finish was coming off of. Turns out they just need a good cleaning. WD-40, a stiff brush, plastic putty knife, and some elbow grease will have these looking good as new.

Quick timer tutorial: check the side to make sure you are on the right setting for “timer” or “on”. On will be always on no matter how the timer is set. Pull the up for off times and push them down for on times. The white part of the dial is daylight while the black part is night.

O-rings! Many of our fixtures use a double o-ring to seal. These have a flat side and a sound side, place the flat side against the fixture. This will help create a better seal and keep the rings from moving.

Path light placement:
We often hear 8-12 feet for path lights, but what does that really mean? I use what I call the anchor light approach. On any path there are certain places that should have a light, the start and end of the path, steps, intersections or hard turns. In the picture the red arrows are where I would place the “anchor lights”. If the distance between these is less than 12’ I don’t need another light. If it’s more than 12’ I would add another fixture. Start your layout with the “anchor lights” and fill in as needed.
