Smoke on the horizon doesn't always indicate a wildfire emergency. Sometimes, it's part of the plan. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples used intentional, controlled fire to care for the land, clear out dead brush, and make room for healthy new growth. Today, fire departments and land managers have adopted this same principle, setting small, carefully controlled burns to remove the dry vegetation that turns a small spark into a devastating wildfire. Less dead brush means less fuel, and less fuel means a fire that's easier to stop.
May is Wildfire Awareness Month. Sequoia is proud to work alongside agencies throughout California to plan and carry out this kind of proactive fire management, keeping communities and wild places safer for everyone.
