🌧️ FLASH FLOOD SAFETY REMINDER 🌧️

With the large amount of rain our area has received recently, Huerfano County Fire Protection District would like to remind everyone to stay alert for flash flooding, especially near low-water crossings, washes, creeks, drainage areas, and rural roads.

🚫 NEVER attempt to drive through a flooded roadway.

It can be extremely difficult to judge the depth of moving water or know whether the roadway underneath has been washed away. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

• Never drive around barricades or road-closed signs.
• Avoid walking through moving floodwater.
• Keep children and pets away from flooded creeks, ditches, culverts, and drainage areas.
• Be especially cautious after dark, when flooded roads are much harder to see.
• If water begins rising around your vehicle, move to higher ground if you can safely do so.
• Stay aware of changing weather conditions and emergency alerts - flash flooding can develop very quickly, even if it isn’t raining where you are.

⚠️ Remember: your vehicle is replaceable. You are not.

When you encounter water across the roadway, TURN AROUND. Find another route.

Please help us keep our community - and our first responders - safe.

⛈️🔥 Welcome to This Week’s Episode of: What Is Colorado Doing?

Monday: ☀️ 94° — basically the surface of the sun.
Tuesday: ⛈️ Maybe storms.
Wednesday: ⛈️ Storms.
Thursday: ⛈️ More storms.
Friday: ⛈️ You guessed it.
Saturday & Sunday: ⛈️ Apparently we live in the tropics now.

Mother Nature has entered the chat, and she appears to be experiencing some ✨mood swings.✨

While we’re enjoying some much-needed moisture, Huerfano County Fire Protection District has a couple friendly reminders:

🔥 Don’t let the rain fool you. Our grasses and vegetation can dry back out quickly, and one hot, windy afternoon can change fire conditions fast. Continue using caution with anything that can create a spark.

⚡ When thunder roars, go indoors. Lightning can start wildland fires and ruin your afternoon in a much more personal way.

🚗 Slow. It. Down. Rain + oil + dirt + Colorado roads = not the time to audition for NASCAR. Increase your following distance, turn on your headlights, and give yourself extra stopping room.

🌊 Never drive through flooded roadways. If water is covering the road, turn around. Your pickup may be impressive, but it is not a bass boat.

🚒 And if you see emergency vehicles working along the roadway, slow down, move over, and give our crews room to work. We like all of our firefighters exactly where they belong: safe and able to go home after the call.

Enjoy the rain. Enjoy the cooler temperatures later this week. And remember…

In Colorado, dress for all four seasons and keep an eye on the sky. Apparently anything is possible. 😂

Assistant Chief Derrick Omer led the training, with Lieutenant Milton Perez and Wildland Coordinator Victoria Driskill assisting with instruction, skills development, and sharing their experience with the crew.

Veteran firefighters and new rookies trained side-by-side, working on the fundamentals of brush truck operations, hand-tool use, fireline construction, and building chains.

For our rookies, this was an opportunity to learn the fundamentals and gain hands-on experience alongside seasoned members. For our veteran firefighters, it was an opportunity to sharpen existing skills, pass along knowledge, and strengthen the way we operate together as a crew.

This kind of training is especially important in rural fire service. When the tones drop, our firefighters may be responding to anything from a small roadside grass fire to a rapidly developing wildland incident. Preparation starts before the call — through training, repetition, teamwork, and getting our hands dirty.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to HCFPD Board Members Joe and Sherri Faris for allowing our department to use their property for this training. Having access to land where our firefighters can get outside and actually put these skills into practice is incredibly valuable, and we appreciate their continued support of our firefighters and training program.

11:43am July 9, 2026:

Chief of Operations Roy Britt is reporting 100% containment on Pole Canyon Fire!

Thanks to our Firefighters, Huerfano County Road & Bridge, Huerfano County Emergency Manager, CalFire, DFPC, Hotshot Crews, and Cheyenne Fire this was a successful containment and thank you to anyone else or agency I missed!!

As of 8:30am July 9, 2026 Chief of Operations Roy Britt, reported 80% containment on Pole Canyon Fire.
