Education Moment

OBLIGATION VS OPPORTUNITY….

Some people regard a half-filled glass as half empty, some regard it as half full, they could be called pessimists or optimists.
If that is true, how does being a pessimist or optimist impact on their world?
Statistically optimists earn more than pessimists, mostly because they see more options in negative situations.

In 2025 if you want to become more of an optimist, here is a way to look at how you perceive your business or personal life and to change that perception over time.

For example, if a customer unexpectedly calls you, do you regard it as an obligation to answer it and deal with it as quickly as possible to get on with your day?

Or do you regard it as an opportunity to serve, earn, learn, influence, network, encourage or to teach?

The difference isn’t the caller but how you respond and what can come from that response.

Responding in a positive manner to every situation is a much more optimistic way to live your life.

How does this relate to your participation in BNI?
Do you view the need to attend the meeting, find referrals, have one to ones, bring visitors, be on the leadership team or complete training or content through BNI University as an obligation or an opportunity?

Obviously, they are all opportunities and if treated as such can bring many rewards.

So how would it be this year to have a sign on your wall with the question: “Obligation or Opportunity?”

For more on this subject listen to Power of One Podcast 20 – Obligation or Opportunity and read “You don’t need a title to be a leader” by Michael Sandborg.

Education Moment 📚

“Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re going to focus on the importance of planning your One-to-Ones strategically. One-to-Ones are one of the most valuable tools for building strong relationships within our Chapter, but to get the most out of them, they need to be planned with intention. Let’s talk about how to approach One-to-Ones for maximum success.”

Body
“Here are three ways to make your One-to-Ones more strategic and effective:

1. Schedule them with purpose – Rather than scheduling One-to-Ones randomly, think about which Members you need to connect with based on your current business goals. For example, if you’re focusing on expanding into a specific industry, have a One-to-One with someone who has experience or contacts in that field.

2. Prepare specific questions – Before the meeting, prepare targeted questions that will help you better understand how you can help the other Member and how they can help you. This ensures the conversation is productive and focused on mutual growth.

3. Share your GAINS Exchange – As always, sharing your GAINS (Goals, Accomplishments, Interests, Networks, and Skills) profile before the One-to-One helps both parties understand each other’s goals and makes the conversation more meaningful. If you haven’t updated yours recently here is your reminder to do so!”

Example
“Let’s say you’re looking to increase your referrals in the real estate sector. You could schedule a One-to-One with the real estate agent in our Chapter, come prepared with questions about their ideal clients, and share your GAINS profile to ensure both of you find ways to support each other’s businesses.”

Conclusion
“Strategic planning makes One-to-Ones more effective. By scheduling with purpose, preparing specific questions, and sharing your GAINS Exchange beforehand, we can turn these meetings into powerful opportunities for growth. Let’s all commit to being more intentional with our One-to-Ones to build stronger relationships and generate more referrals.”

Education Moment this week: 📚

What is BNI’s most well-known and leading Core Value?

Givers Gain®.

In what part of the meeting do we stand up and show Givers Gain®?

Referrals & Testimonials.

It is during the Referrals and Testimonials section of the meeting. It is where we talk about what we have done for other members, rather than our ask or what we have gained for ourselves.

It is called the most important part of the meeting or the “business” part of the meeting because it shows our engagement with each other, the effort we are putting in and the business being passed.

It is where we can be visible in a positive and productive way whilst also building our credibility with our fellow members.

BNI has a structure for what we should say in the referrals and testimonials section of the meeting.

The BNI system is a proven foundation for chapter and member success so bear with me while I explain the recommended structure:

1. We plan what we are going to announce. The time we each have is finite, so we need to use it well.

2. It’s not an opportunity to pitch our business again and relive our weekly presentations.

3. Referrals come first, have priority, and are half of the reason we are here. Announce the referrals you have made (and recorded in the App). If you have more than 1, announce how many you have and highlight one that you particularly enjoyed giving. Referrals show you are giving to others, enhancing your credibility.

4. If you still have time or don’t have a referral this week then give a short, meaningful testimonial for a member that has recently done some work for you or a contact of yours that you referred to them.

We all need to stand and give something during the referrals and testimonials part of the meeting.

We need to show we are engaged and here to give.

We all need to try to have something to announce. It’s what makes it more than a social gathering.

But what if we feel we don’t have anything to announce in any given week?

Maybe we were on holiday, unwell, or extremely busy?

We still need to stand and say something.
How does this work?

Firstly, never apologize for not having a referral. If you can’t think of a testimonial, it’s okay to mention a one-to-one you HAVE had
But instead of saying “I had 5 one-to-ones”, or “we had a nice catch up” or “the lunch was good”, highlight something you learned that would add value to that member’s chances of getting a referral.

Worst case scenario, you haven’t had a one to one this week either, you could highlight a positive interaction with another member.

Occasionally we just need to remind ourselves what is best practice without losing sight of having fun and enjoying the meeting.
