Are you seeing or smelling smoke in the Charleston area? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”ฅ

Satellite imagery shows a fire in the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, likely a prescribed burn. Gusty northerly winds have been transporting smoke south into parts of the Charleston metro, especially Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms and Sullivanโ€™s Island.

The good news: some of the smoke appears to be shifting eastward. If you have respiratory issues, keep this in mind and limit prolonged outdoor exposure if smoke is affecting your area.

Fire can spread even without flames directly touching nearby objects. Understanding how heat travels helps us recognize fire hazards.

4 WAYS FIRE CAN SPREAD:

1. Direct Flame Contact โ€“ Flames directly touch and ignite combustible materials.

2. Conduction โ€“ Heat travels through materials, such as metal pipes, beams, and other solid objects.

3. Convection โ€“ Moving hot gases and smoke carry heat through rooms, stairways, and openings.

4. Radiation โ€“ Heat travels across a distance and can ignite nearby combustible materials without direct contact.

โš ๏ธ FIRE SAFETY REMINDER:

Flames donโ€™t have to reach another room for it to become dangerous. Heat and hot gases can spread ahead of visible flames.

Understanding how heat transfers helps firefighters anticipate fire spread, protect exposures, and make safer decisions during operations.

With some cooler temperatures finally making their way into the Lowcountry, Cainhoy Fire crews took advantage of the weather to spend time on the training grounds.

This week, firefighters focused on pump operations, flowing big water, and understanding the maximum pumping capabilities and limitations of our apparatus. Regular hands-on training like this helps ensure our crews are prepared to deliver the water needed when our community needs us most.

Over the past several days, our crews have responded to an increase in motor vehicle collisions throughout our community.

Weโ€™d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to:

โœ… Slow down and obey posted speed limits
โœ… Put distractions away and stay focused on the road
โœ… Leave early so youโ€™re not rushing to your destination
โœ… Be patient with other drivers and pedestrians
โœ… Always wear your seatbelt

While we are always ready to respond when help is needed, we would much rather meet you at community events, school functions, and local gatherings than at the scene of a crash.

A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret. Let's work together to keep our roads safe for everyone.

ALERT! Fire and EMS crews are on scene at Charity Church Rd and Hwy 41 for a multi vehicle collision with entrapment. Please use caution in the area and avoid if possible.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ WE WILL NEVER FORGET | SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the countless families whose lives were forever changed.

We remember the first responders who ran toward danger when others were running to safety. We remember the innocent lives taken too soon. We remember the bravery, sacrifice and selflessness displayed in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

And while we will never forget the horror of September 11, may we also never forget September 12.

The day after, our country felt different. We were not divided by our differences. We were neighbors. We were Americans. We checked on one another, prayed together, flew our flag proudly and stood united.

May we continue striving to create a world that carries the spirit of September 12, not just in the aftermath of tragedy, but every day. A world with more kindness, compassion, unity and love for one another.

Today, the Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office remembers every life lost, every hero who answered the call and every family that continues to carry the weight of that day.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
