Three lawn care companies looked at this lawn and gave the homeowner three different answers. Not one of them asked what had happened on the site.

A tree had been removed from this exact spot. The soil was badly compacted. It wasn't disease and it wasn't grubs, so no pesticide was ever going to fix it.

Turf appearance is one of the most common reasons for callbacks and complaints in this industry, and a lot of those calls start with skipping the site history.

Before recommending a treatment, ask what was here before and whether there's been any construction, grading, or removal work. It takes two minutes and can save you an application that won't work and a client who stops trusting your diagnosis.

The more we learn about the soil and plants we care for, the more it pays to ask better questions up front.

Myth: If trees and shrubs are struggling, they need more fertilizer.

Fact: Most soils already hold plenty of nutrients. The question is whether the biology is there to unlock them.

Here's something most people don't know: plants send a big share of the sugars they make back down into the soil. It's an investment. Those sugars feed bacteria and fungi, which break down minerals and organic matter that roots can't access on their own. When those microbes are eaten by other soil organisms, the nutrients are released in a form plants can actually absorb.

But that cycle only works when the full soil food web is present and in balance. Without it, fertilizer becomes a short-term patch instead of a long-term solution.

Your trees and shrubs made it through summer. Now what?

After months of heat, drought, and environmental stress, a fall Plant Health Care program shouldn't just "fertilize the plant." The goal is recovery.

Fall is one of the most important times of year below ground. As top growth slows, roots and soil organisms stay active while the soil is still warm. That window is an opportunity to improve the conditions that support recovery.

A thoughtful fall PHC program should be asking:
🌱 Is there enough moisture in the root zone?
🌱 Is the soil compacted?
🌱 Can water and oxygen move through the soil?
🌱 Is there enough organic matter?
🌱 Are we supporting beneficial soil biology?
🌱 Do the roots have what they need to recover and prepare for next year?

Mulch volcanoes are everywhere, and they're slowly killing the trees they're meant to protect. 🌳

Piled against the trunk, mulch holds moisture right against the bark. That bark isn't built for constant wet, so it softens and rots. Roots start growing up into the mulch instead of out into the soil, and some circle back and strangle the trunk. The damage takes years to show, which is exactly why it keeps happening.

Correct version: 2 to 3 inches deep, pulled back from the trunk so the root flare shows, spread out toward the drip line. Wide and flat, never deep and piled.

If you manage properties, this is one of the easiest wins on your list. Walk the site and look for trunk flares you can't see.

The hottest summer on record is about to show up in your tree inventory. 🌳

NOAA confirmed it: June through August 2026 was the warmest summer the lower 48 has seen in 132 years, beating the 1936 Dust Bowl record. Rainfall landed in the driest third of the record too.

Here's the problem for anyone managing a canopy: decline runs on a lag. Trees that looked fine in August can be removal candidates by spring, and that means unplanned spend and liability you didn't budget for.

What usually gets missed is the soil. Baked ground loses the fungi and bacteria that move water and nutrients into roots. You can irrigate all you want, but without that biology the tree can't use it. So we test it instead of guessing.

Planting is not the hard part. Planting is when the investment gets most vulnerable.

A new tree or shrub goes in the ground already dealing with transplant shock, compacted soil, a root system too small for the canopy it has to support, and moisture that comes and goes. What follows is slow establishment, stress, decline, and sometimes a dead plant.

And when a plant fails, the replacement plant is the cheapest part. There is the warranty claim, the labor to pull it and set another one, another trip to the property, and a customer who is now second guessing the whole job. One replacement can eat the profit from the entire install.

Soil health belongs in the install conversation, not the callback conversation.

One tree turning three weeks ahead of its neighbors is telling you something.

Premature fall color usually traces back to root stress, not weather. Same species, same block, same conditions, and one tree breaks from the pattern. The difference is almost always below grade.

Worth checking while the leaves are still on:

Root flare buried below grade
Compaction in the critical root zone
Mulch piled against the trunk
Standing water or poor drainage

Same property. Same rainfall. Two very different outcomes.

The jar on the left is compacted. Water sits on top, runs off, and takes your inputs with it. The one on the right moves water down into the root zone where it does something.

This is worth knowing before winter, because compaction does not resolve on its own over the cold months and you will be looking at the same runoff in April.
