DETROIT - RETIREE LUNCHEON - 6/12/2026

Our annual Metro Detroit Retiree Luncheon was held recently. It was a fun afternoon of laughs and camaraderie. We had nearly 75 of our honorable retirees spent the afternoon sharing stories of their careers, describing how they transitioned from apprentices to journeypersons to retirees, and how they are enjoying their retirement with their monthly pension benefits. Thank you for spending the afternoon with us and for your many years of dedicated service to BAC Local 2 of Michigan.

On Wednesday, BAC Local 2 Michigan was proud to join the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), Schoolcraft College, the Michigan Community College Association, and other partners for the first signing ceremony of the Michigan College Credit for Apprenticeships Program (MI-CCAP).

This new statewide initiative recognizes the education and training completed through registered apprenticeship programs by awarding college credit toward certificates and degrees.

While MI-CCAP will expand these opportunities across Michigan, BAC apprentices have long benefited from college credit articulation agreements. Our apprenticeship program currently provides up to 49 college credits that can be transferred to nearly every community college in Michigan, creating a pathway to an associate degree and beyond.

Programs like MI-CCAP further strengthen the connection between apprenticeship, higher education, and workforce development, ensuring skilled tradespeople receive recognition for the education and training they have earned while building successful careers.

Building Community Through Union Craftsmanship
The BAC Local 2 Marquette Chapter recently partnered with LIUNA Local 1329 and IBEW Local 906 to construct a new masonry sign at South Beach in Marquette.
South Beach is a city-owned park that is part of an ongoing effort to transform the former power plant site into a vibrant public recreational area. IBEW Local 906 has long supported the park through annual volunteer cleanup efforts and by providing pro-bono work when needed. When the opportunity arose to build a new location sign for the park, they reached out to BAC members for assistance with the masonry work.
Working alongside the City of Marquette and Mike Sojlund; BAC members laid the block and stone while the City poured and installed the cap. The project was completed in phases, with the block work completed in the fall and the stone installation finished this spring.
The project represents approximately 248 hours of skilled union labor and showcases the value of collaboration between the building trades. Apprentices from BAC Marquette Chapter played a major role throughout the project, gaining valuable hands-on experience while helping improve their community.

Special thanks to the many BAC Local 2 Marquette Chapter apprentices who contributed to the project, as well as BAC members Alex Sovey, Adam Saari, and Brian Lantto, along with Josh Fruik of LIUNA Local 1329, for their hard work and dedication throughout the project.
We also extend our appreciation to LIUNA Local 1329 for their partnership and assistance, and to IBEW Local 906 for their continued commitment to maintaining and improving South Beach for the benefit of the Marquette community.
This project is another great example of what can be accomplished when union trades work together to give back to their communities.

Thank you to the Teamsters, Painters and our apprentices who walked the picket line on May 20, 2026 against non-union contractor Zuñgia Cement.

We were able to turn away 4 truck deliveries of concrete delaying their pour. Together we show solidarity and stand union strong!

TMT SURVEY and GIFT CARD WINNERS

In order to understand the concerns of our membership, BAC Local
2 conducted a survey of our Tile Marble Terrazzo members prior to contract negotiations. We compiled all of that data to better understand our members’ thoughts and the direction they wish to see the union moving towards.

As an added incentive to promote participation in the survey, BAC Local 2 awarded $100 Home Depot gift cards to 4 randomly selected members.

Congratulations to our winners:
• 🏆 Scott Paul
• 🏆 Daniel Sweetwood (not pictured)
• 🏆 Joseph Tasson
• 🏆 Aaron Turski

Thank you to everyone who participated and made your voice heard!
