A strong hearing conservation program needs good testing, good records, and a process for following up when something changes.

An annual hearing test gives you a number.

A series of hearing tests gives you a trend.

Earplugs and earmuffs can look simple on a PPE checklist, but use in the real world is more complicated.

Workers need hearing protection that fits correctly, works with their other PPE, and allows them to perform the job safely. Comfort and communication also influence whether protection stays in place throughout the shift.

Take a look at what’s happening in the field:

👂 Are workers constantly adjusting their hearing protection?
👂 Removing it to communicate?
👂 Wearing it differently than intended?

Those behaviors can tell you something about the fit between the protection, the worker, and the task.
