If we finish a project in under the estimated time, which we always aim to do, we are prepared to complete the “bonus project” of your choice. This is a smaller area in your home like a junk drawer, cabinet, small linen closet, or even your car, that can be completed in a short amount of time to finish out your contract. There is always something to organize!

Today, after we finished our weeks-long library inventory project, we had just enough time to tidy up this cabinet area of the barn office.

The right shelving changes everything.

Builder-grade closets usually give you one long hanging rod, but most people need shelving far more than hanging space.

For this office, we cleared the desk (prime real estate) by creating smart storage in the office closet for items that are used less often. Now the workspace feels calm, functional, and easy to maintain.

Organization is so trendy, and the industry is saturated with organizers. But organization is more than just pretty bins and rainbows - though those are fun, too!

Replace the word organization with the word functional, and you begin to understand why the idea is so popular. Then, begin resetting each space to function in a way that supports your family routines and goals.

Start small, like in a laundry or utility room.

1. Create designated zones/cabinets for each type of item, such as laundry care, tools, utility items, cleaning overstock, and more. Gather like items from other rooms and cabinets. Remove items that belong in other zones.

2. Use bins to prevent “product creep” or over purchasing. Choose open top bins that reach the end of the cabinet or shelf. Being able to put items away in one step - often with one hand while you hold a baby in the other - makes all of the difference.

3. Label! Temporary labeling is better than no labeling at all. Labels keep the family and all helpers on the same page, reducing mom’s mental load.

4. Reserve a shelf or a bin for overstock, and use your overstock to replenish bins and categories. This is typically a high shelf or a low cabinet.

5. Trade your Costco membership for Amazon subscribe & save, and eliminate the need for entire shelves of overstock.

Creating systems that allow your whole family and any helpers to know exactly where to find and put items away, being able to tell at a glance how much of something you own and when to restock, will make your life better several times a day, every day, and will add free time back into your weeks!

Grief changes how much capacity we have. Thoughtful organizing lightens our load by reducing overwhelm, eliminating extra upkeep, and simplifying daily decisions. It’s not about having less for the sake of less, instead, it’s about keeping what you love and creating systems that support you instead of draining you.

The family that has lived here for over two decades experienced the tremendous and tragic loss of their wonderful mother and wife just 18 months ago. Beautiful reminders of her remain throughout the kitchen and the rest of the home.
