New on Forests at Work: California Governor Gavin Newsom just vetoed a bill that would have fundamentally changed the mission of the state's demonstration forests. What does it say about the role of active forest management, and what lessons should Oregon and Washington take from it?

Hampton forester and VP of Resources, Dave Kunert weighs in:

By vetoing Assembly Bill 2494, Governor Newsom made the case that state forest management should be guided by professional judgment and on-the-ground conditions.

Bamboo toilet paper comes wrapped in a compelling sustainability story. But does it hold up when compared with products made from wood residuals here at home?

State forests are expected to provide habitat, recreation, timber, jobs and revenue for public services. But what happens when policy decisions reduce the timber revenue that also pays for forest management?

In the latest Forests at Work, Hampton Forester and VP of Resources, Dave Kunert, looks at the growing financial strain facing state forest systems in Washington and Oregon and the tradeoffs that are too often left out of the conversation.

“Major changes to forest management should be grounded in science, informed by experience, and accompanied by an honest assessment of both the benefits and the costs.”

The Roadless Rule is back in the headlines. In our latest Forests at Work article, forester and VP of Resources, Dave Kunert takes a closer look at what rescinding the rule might actually mean for federal forest management, restoration work, wildfire risk, and timber supply.

Rescinding the Roadless Rule would restore some flexibility to federal forest management and potentially expand restoration work, but major increases in saw log supply are unlikely.

When we say we care about our employees we show it. Whether it is through our safety awards, random gifts, bonuses, picnics, community involvement and more.

A recent privilege I had as the Warrenton Division HR Manager, I have been able to deliver homemade food and health baskets personally with the plant manager to an ill employee.

The first week was full of homemade soup all organic, and organic immune boosting vitamins, juices, a puzzle and more. That week the employee was not holding food down well so that is why they wanted soup.

This week they are getting better, appetite included, and wanted comfort food. So per request, cheesy scalloped potatoes with ham, cornbread, all organic of course. Plus a variety of immunity boosting products, a few magazines and some fresh fruit and veggie juices. Don't you wish you worked for Hampton Lumber?

We used to have a saying in the HR office. “It’s always a sweet experience dealing with HR”, and we kept a hefty supply of candy for those 3pm slumps!

With 2021 being the year of wellness at the Warrenton Hampton division we swapped the candy out for healthy snacks. We started with fresh fruit, nuts and grass fed beef sticks since then we added veggie crisps, seaweed snacks and cranberry energy drinks. Candy and chemical laden energy drinks were a real staple for our employees.

So happy to report that not only have the healthy snacks been a big hit, but I had many employees tell me they would buy fresh fruit and it always went bad at home. But now after 3 months of changes to our afternoon slump choices, many employees (including many single bachelors notorious for poor eating habits), have become used to reaching for these snacks and are buying them for home!

Greetings Hampton friends and family,

With the emergence of the pandemic in 2020 many healthy habits fell to the wayside, so we at Hampton Warrenton division decided to make 2021 the year of Wellness. We kicked it off with a 3 month set off challenges, see list below. Stayed tuned for our next 3 months. For now we would like to share our first month of winners!

• We have Jama Evan in the first picture, she won the step challenge by walking over 70 miles in a week! She won a new Fitbit Versa.
• Second week winner was Kevin Curry, who went above the 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and won himself a NutriBullet blender set.
• Next up is Erick Gres, he won the cardio challenge, working out every single day! He won some Skull Candy wireless ear buds for his workout sessions.
• Winner # 4 was Rudy Richards who was one if not the only employee that was able to go with zero screen time before bed and get his 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
Rudy won a multi-sensory alarm clock and a cooling memory foam pillow.

Other cool changes we made per the suggestion of Elizabeth Hampton, was to nix the office candy and replace with healthy snacks.
We follow our Covid-19 food safety rules and we now have employees stop in for fresh fruit, nuts, or grass fed beef sticks.
We are brainstorming how to add some veggies to the mix and remain covid compliant. Suggestions are welcome.

Our last challenge of the 12 weeks is the Random Act of Kindness challenge, I look forward to sharing the results. We have a lot of humanitarians in the house.

Thanks for letting me share our fun and cheers to a healthy and safe 2021!

But we take special pride in that our employees themselves give to several local charities through payroll deductions. The employees themselves here at Warrenton will be buying $4,000.00 of presents for local families in need. Let the shopping commence!
