Did you know Alzheimer’s is only one disease that can cause dementia? Many people think that dementia is the disease, but dementia is actually a symptom of the disease itself.
Many other diseases can cause dementia like Lewy Body dementia, Vascular dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, and more.
Most people are aware of Alzheimer’s and its hallmark of forgetfulness and memory loss, but other diseases such as Lewy Body and Fronto-temporal can cause shuffling gait, hallucinations, and delusions and leave memory intact for longer periods of time.
Each disease has different symptoms and needs a different treatment plan. While someone with Alzheimer’s might need memory strategies, someone with Lewy Body dementia might need a behavioral plan. Dementia isn’t a “one size fits all” diagnosis.
If your loved one is experiencing any signs of forgetfulness, personality or mood changes, disorientation, hallucinations or delusions, shuffling gait, posture, or language changes, you should speak with a doctor immediately about your concerns.
A neurologist or neuropsychologist will complete testing necessary to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
Speech therapy is sometimes forgotten (no pun intended) in the chaos of a new dementia diagnosis, but is essential for navigating cognitive, communication, and swallowing changes.
